Default 1972 Gulf Coats Newbie

WOW! what a website. I brought home a 1972 20ft yesterday. This will be the first of many posts, with all the of info. from you veterans. I was going to post pics but my camera batteries died, so I'l do this later.
1st..the boat has a 25 inch mercury on a Jack plate the owner said this was necessary due to the depth of the transom. Is there a way to figure out where the motor needs to be on the Jack plate. Or is the plate really necessary.
2nd. there are no id numbers on transom(painted over) are they somewhere else or should I just go lightly with my sanding.I want to make sure they are the same as the title. The number(on the title) is only 4 digits long is this good or bad. Also the title says 19ft.So,Im assuming it is.
3rd Where can I find the specs on this boat?I can't wait to restore it but the motor and mechanics are my first concern.
Thanks

Some of the early boats did not have the hull id engraved. There was a aluminum placard that was glued to the hull usually in the transom splash well area. My 69 had this and the Id was 4 digits as well.

Did you buy a cc or a bow rider? The specs for all the boats with the exception of the bow rider can be found on the home page of this site. Welcome

I have a 71 20sf that only has four numbers on it. They are on the starboard outside of the transom.

Strick, that 20 is coming along great, I love all of you pics.

thanks for the replies. It is a CC, that can either stand for a Center Console or a chunk of coal. It will only be the later for a short time though.
Any thoughts on the jack plate????

I saw the specs on the home page and thats not my boat thats why I was wondering.I don't have a baitwell in the middle of the deck in front of the motor like the 20SF and it did not have a fuel tank under the deck like a 20MA. Would the technical things be the same if it has been modified. I will send some pics later today
thanks again

I have a 72' also. My hull id is 4 digits and is not engraved on the transom. It was on a very faded metallic sticker on the console which I intend to have remade. The really early Potter models like ours are set up a little different, so our gas tank is in the console and our livewell is in the port side transom box instead of in the deck. The earliest Potter models like the 69' are slightly different from ours in the location of the rod storage being farther aft I think and I am not sure what else. I don't know offhand what year they started putting the tank under the deck.

If you have the original transom, it is 20 inches so you would have to have a jack plated jacked up 5 inches to put a 25 inch shaft motor on it without raising your transom.

Where are you located btw?

I can't spell i apologize. It should read Gulf Coast. Im in texas just south of Houston, west of Galveston... Alvin TX.
So,I guess I can assume I have aquired a "Potter Hull".
Iam going to attach a pic or two shortly.
thanks
