New power on a 20
What new power is everyone putting on their 20? I'm in the process of having my boat redone and am leaning hard towards the small block v6 2 stroke. Probably going with the 175 opti or 200 e-tec. I've thought about the 140 suzuki, but I'd like a little more power.
I've heard people with the 140 zuke are getting around 4-5 mpg at around 30 mph. Any ideas what to expect with a 175 opti? Any real world numbers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the input. |

Re: New power on a 20
You can search this site for numerous threads discussing power selection for the various hulls. Need to consider transom ht. & engine wt.; the 20" transom was designed for a 300 lb 2S. It'll sit pretty low with a V-6 unless it's been raised to 25". 150 is plenty of power for the 20 unless you like to burn lots of gas! Mine will run almost 50 with light load; avg mpg in first 90 hrs is just over 5 mpg w/ 150 (really 165) E-Tec.

Re: New power on a 20
The new 2 srokes are so close on gas stay with them for weight. As for Etec they are strong anything from 150 up will do fine, not sure you want a 200 etec on it though. All the weights should be close so just look for price, I don't think you NEED to pay for 200 HP if its saves some bucks.

Re: New power on a 20
I like that 5 mpg...
I'll be shopping around at the Ft Laud boatshow. No real preference between the E-tec or Opti, I guess whichever one gives the better deal. I'm having my '72 redone, new raised floor, raised transom, bunch of goodies. I wish I could say I was doing it myself, but I'm not. I hope to post pics when its done. Thanks again for the help. I'll be at the show on Friday and Saturday, is there a classic seacraft meeting spot or anything? I'd love to pick a couple of your brains for ideas and what to / what not to do. |
