Thank you peter for your response my nieghbor is selling his 1998 hull rigged in 2001 W/ 250hp yamaha w aluminium trailer for 15000.00. The main reason I was interested in this boat I know the history and I dont think it has seen the water more than a dozen times the boat is immaculate. He is in finacial trouble and needs cash seems like a great deal according to nada boat values .But i am very interested in knowing what type of problems the newer boats have and what to look for I realize they dont build anything like they used to. I am not interested in debating new vs old just looking for info & how they compare with other modern boats do they still have the legendary ride? any info is greatly appreciated

Here is my opinion on a couple of fronts.

First, regarding the comparing of the old classic hulls to the new hulls the main difference is that the old boats were hand built with pure quality in mind. Quality was everything. Money was lost by the owner, but he would not give into quality.

The newer boats have been built on more of an assembly line mentality. If you go to places like the thehulltruth and other boating werb sites, you will read that there are many new SeaCraft owners who have great boats.

Second, regarding your neighbors "deal", unless there is something very wrong (such as the hull is crap or the engine is about to go) that is a steal. It is about $8k to $12k less than I would have guessed.

If I were you this is what I would do

1) Hire a boat surveyor with a good reputation. If you want I can send you an example of a good survey report.
Act fast.
2) Go to other web sites (not too many) and get other people to weigh in.

The "design" is the same for the most part. After 8 years, if there where any serious construction issues, a good marine surveyor will find them. That boat is at least 8k under value, even in this market.

If you like the boat, get a marine surveyor to check out the motor, transom, decks, wiring, rigging, and hull for voids. If it comes back clean, and you like the boat, you got yourself a deal.

IMHO, most of the new boats that had any problems surfaced pretty fast over time, less than a year or 2. If it is solid now, it's probably a solid boat. Even a few of the old mythical hulls had problems, did I say get a surveyor

I have a 1998 23' SeaCraft. People bash the newer hulls. I love the boat, and have not had a problem with it. It is solid and built well. From some of the comments you read you figure the newer seacrafts will just fall apart sitting on a trailer or rip in half in a 2’ chop. Not the case. From what I’ve seen the price you quoted is quite low. If everything checks out with the surveyor go for it.

If you want a 23' boat, that's about as good a deal as you'll find for $15K.

Disregard the old vs. new threads, there were 'classic' hulls that fell apart and there are '98's that are great (as well as every other Tracker/BPS year).

I have a 1989 23WA and it has been a super boat. I just repowered with a new Honda 225 HP. Haven't had much chance to run it, just barley 2 hours on it. I paid more for that engine than you would be paying for the whole boat. I consider that a super deal. If that is the type of boat you want, you better jump on it before some else puts money in his hand.
