Horizontal rod holders 23 cc
Looking for a alternative to teak or starboard to fabricate new horizontal rod holders was thinking about using a plastic deck board type material . Anyone have any thoughts or ideas also contemplating incorporating a toe rail in with them????

Consider PVC board, which is available from most building supply companies. It's cheap, very easy to work (except the dust makes a mess), can be glued (unlike starboard), and is available in all kinds of sizes, even sheets. The downside is the cut surfaces will never be as slick as the finished surfaces, even with fine sanding, but it holds paint well. Also, long unsupported pieces can flex, but so will starboard.
The material is cheap enough to justify buying a piece just to fool around.

Hi Wattaway. I had to replace my old teak O/R bases and had Prospect Plastics copy the teak exactly in 3/4" starboard. They did a beautiful job. You'll have better appearance w/ starboard than the PVC mentioned but starboard is more brittle and mo' money, if that is a factor. Otherwise, you're back to wood.

I have only heard good things about that plasteak. No personal experience but the hull truth is a great place to search to find a few guys who have.

Had Juan from specialty marine products drop by yesterday with a sample of the Plasteak For me to look at. looks like exactly what I was looking for. Resembles starboard only in teak and didn't have the open grain that I saw with the deck boards at home depo or lowes .
