KEEP YOUR MOTOR WELL TUNED, GET A KICKER THAT WILL GET YOU HOME AND MOUNT ON STERN, RELAX AND GO OFFSHORE.

Bobfish,

I agree with Jack. My project 23 has a 200 Yamaha and will get my tender's Honda 8 HP 4 stroke, which mounts on a stainless steel adjustable kicker mount. It pushes it at hull speed (7 mph) and I expect to get 3 mpg @ 4500 rpm, for a posible range of over 350 miles. That'll get ya home.

A set of controls can be added to sweeten the set-up. You could probably put a 15 hp on a bracket with linkage and controls for $5,000. It's a popular option in the Great Lakes for trolling and cause it's cheap.

I would guess your boat is worth between $15 and 20,000. With that cash in hand, you could consider another project, making it the way you want it.

Bob, if you are truly worried, the kicker is great but if health may be an issue, buy an EPIRB. For $1000 is can be some further piece of mind.
