Hey Scott, we fish them on a three way. Use a short leader for the mojo~2 or 3 ft, a long leader 10 to 15 ft for the parachute, which I like the big spoon on instead of the chute most of the time. We will mostly just slow troll em, wire is the best, but shallower water you can bottom bounce but it is not nesesary. They really work well and the pictures dont really do them justice as far as the size goes. You can probably see that the mojo itself is really nothing more than a big inline sinker powder coated green or whatever with eyes and a big shad/swimming tail. Hope this helps- they are the real deal down here, or up here for Brad.

Oh, umbrella rigs will work with the parachutes also, but I dont pull them much. If I do the green #4 drone is the ticket for me. You need to try them-Im pretty sure you will like them, after all the rockfish you guys catch are the same ones(except for the resident fish) we are getting ready to catch soon here hopefully!!!
My typical spread will be a mojo on wire down the center , 2 planers off each stern corner (#4's with rapala super shad raps pretty close to the boat- no more than 20 ft of line plus 15 ft of leader. Outside long I like to run inlines on each side , two different sizes, 20 ft leaders(100,125 lb test) with maybe an umbrella on one side and another big spoon, parachute etc on the other side. I know yo7u didnt ask for all that but i thought it might give you a perspective on the way we do it here. How about you guys?? [ November 07, 2003, 03:31 PM: Message edited by: Miles Offshore ]

Hmmm, maybe but I dont think so Brad, they feed primarily on large menhaden, eels etc, The prefered method of trolling here is as slow as she goes, maybe 2.5 knots the ideal speed. Early in the season , now till x-mas you will mostly find the larger fish down deep(mostly because of the large numbers of boats persuing them keeping them down). When you find them on top later in the season-January to about the middle of Feb depending on water temperature, they will be in the upper part of the water column. Funny thing about it , you are subject to catching a flounder or a 200 lb bluefin 1/2 mile off the beach!!(up too 3 miles out is the current max federal eez limit) Large swimming plugs as well as bucktails (bugeye 3/8 oz with strip of porkrind also work well) A lot of people love the Manns "stretch" series, 25's and 30's. I wont pull them, they are dangerous(fly at you when they pop out of the water) and they love to tangle the rest of your lines while deployed.I havnt seen any of the style lures you show being used although I have given thought to pulling a green machine and/or a nekkid balyhoo just for $hits and giggles to see if they will work.

Colors ?? Shiny,Solid ,?This Platypus can be pulled slow ? 2.5 ? That maybe to slow,Our boats Drift faster than that.Mybe the angle on the head gives it action at slower speed. The inner tube is also at a angle. When I came out with this lure I cut the angle both ways up/down(which shows in the photo) The upper cut came out the winner.Dives from side to side then will surface & run like a "BIRD" then Dive again. The under cut did just the opposite. Keep My brain work'n for a lil bit here.I can make the "TAIL" longer & use Mylar for a inner skirt.

Miles,
We've had great success with the Mann's Stretch 25 (dorado color), but you're right, heads up when pulling them out of the water whle underway! You definitely can't troll them with anything else in the spread. The bunker spoon is starting to catch on up this way over the past 2 seasons. Guys do really well with them way down inside Cape Cod Bay over the large shoals. Single Rapala Magnums work well, as do 9'er rigs (local version of a drail/umbrella rig). Those Mann's Sea Snakes work well also, but if bluefish are around, forget it, they'll shred those tails in an instant. At least you can replace the tails though. |
