Nah, 8hp is way to small for a 23. I used to run a 9.9 on a 20' GW I had, and WOT it did 6-7 mph on a flat day. I would think a 25 four stroke would be a good kicker for a 23, it might get you to 12-14 mph if your lucky?

The high thrust yamaha's are great engines with a super low gear ratio and are generally propped with larger diameter lower pitched props

2.92 ratio on 8T hp High Thrust model
2.08 ratio on regualr 8hp four stroke model

My Dad had a 15hp Honda HT . . . and it pushed his 25ft pretty well 6 - 7 mph.
