I want to keep the drain and plug at the top, I was just wandering if there was supposed to be something around the ring (hole) at the bottom. Before I put on the bottom paint it looked as if it was worn around the hole like something had been there?

The bronze thru-hull typically has a flange that may have worn/broken off.

The fish box drain tube should look the same as the transom drain. Those drain tubes are brass, and tend to deteriorate over time and begin to leak. Yours looks like someone tried to seal the outside edge of the tube with some kind of sealant. Is it leaking into the bilge?
You can replace it with a new brass tube. They are just a few dollars, any marine store should have them in several length. One end is already flared, cut the other end with a tubing cutter so it sticks out 1/8"-3/16". There is a special tool made that will flare the end (the tool cost about $35, or you can find someone to loan you one-if you are close to Satellite Beach, you can borrow mine). Be sure to bed it with a good sealant, such as 5200. Good Luck Lloyd

I've cobbled up a similar tool using threaded rod, washers, and some large sockets that had a similar flare on them. Not as fancy, but it did the job!

My experience has been....you must anneal the brass tube or it will split when flaring. I replaced all on a 22' Whaler, bought the material from McMaster Carr, cut to length adding for flange, and did most flaring with a ball peen hammer and/or trailer ball. The annealing process is...heat end with torch hot-hot, dunk in water immediately, repeat...should not split.

i painted that same console. i used interlux 1 part paint. i skimped a little on the prep work by using rattle can filler primer. the paint will peel off if scratched. i sprayed it with a detail spray gun from homedepot for like 30 dollars. or its at harbor freight for 10. i followed the cleaning directions and thinning directions on the can of paint and it sprayed very well. im happy with the results.

back to the drain, I'm still a little confused. Does the brass drain go from top to bottom of hull (2 ft.) or is there a brass piece at the top and a separate one at the bottom? I have a flared brass piece at the top now but I can't tell how far it goes down. Can someone post a picture of the bottom of their hull showing the drain? Thanks.
