My 6 HP SailPro kicker won't pull more than 2 feet of head and a filter, so I suspect the Yamaha might not. The Tohatsu dealer said that I need to run it dry if I think I won't run it for a week. That seems to work pretty well. If it sits for more than a week, then I drain the float bowls too.

If that isn't the problem then I have a thought-you could polish the fuel in your tank with a squeeze bulb to push fuel from the tank thru a separator and return it to the tank. Assuming you have a smallish tank, then this might be practical. Most of the crap is on the bottom, so you could squeeze it for a bit before starting?
