Who mounted the bracket and the engine? is there a hook in the hull on one side? if the boat was "redone" or sat on a roller trailer full of water that would be my guess.

There was a rumor that one of the molds floating around during the mid 80's was tweaked (i.e. tracker built). Tracker supposedly laid up some brand new hulls with factory hooks on one side If your hull is from that time period or was "rebuilt" at any point you might get under it with a straight edge and look around.

Here's a picture of a Hiliner with a Wicked BAD hook in it. (boat was stored on a trailer full of water for 10 years)
