yes that is the cover i am talking about- when i say replace the pump I am talking about the whole assembly-impellar, housing, all of it- after ahwile the bearings will usually go bad as well and they are more of a pain in the ass to try and rebuild than to just can and buy a new one. there will be 5 or 6 big allen headed bolts where it attaches to the flywheel- undo these- make sure you correctly match up the pump then shitcan the old one- (i always keep a good spare one on the boat). did you see groovesd in the cover when you removed it (btw- it should be brass?)i would post some pix for you but my scanner is broken-

Hey miles, i didn't change any of the motor mounts (yet) sorry. However here are some pictures of what i am up against. I pulled the houses of the impeller housing in an effort to find the old impeller pieces. I also checked the heat exchanger with no pieces sited. However in the discharge side of the hose coming off the impeller i did find these:

Also since I was already pulling hoses off i figured i might as well double check the new impeller i put in after the first one burned out. as you will recall, i put this impeller in and restarted a few days ago and she overheated again. As i found, the impeller i had put in a few days ago was now trash as well. So now my questions will mainly stem from this next picture:

As you can see i hope, the left hand side says right side out, and the other side says left side out. Now just so i make sure to put my hoses back in the right way... my engine is right hand rotation. Does that mean that my discharge hose will go where it says right hand out? i should have remembered and marked it when i took it out the first time but being a rookie i didn't. Now many of you are proably saying get a damn service manual, which i am currently waiting on. This next picture is how the housing looked when i replaced the first impeller. the left hose attachment is where i thought the supply side was intially and that is how i put it back. Also since my engine is right hand rotation does it mater which way i curve the fins when i install the impeller in the housing? Sorry about all the questions but i want this thing right and don't want to have to worry about it. So from what i can see these are my potential problems: air lock, backwards hoses, grove in plate. Please help, i want her in the water, striper are everywhere. Thank you to all.

hey bud- the left hand port in your pic (rh means right handed motor rotation) is out, the right hand port in the pic is inlet side for your motor. you dont have to even start your motor to see- just stick that inlet side hose in a five gallon bucket of water and turn her over- the water will come quick and strong if the pump is good. the pump impellar will usually correct itself if you have them (the fins) in backwards. like i said before check the pump for water flow first to eliminate any more pump questions.

Thank you miles, I changed the housing and grooved plate along with another impeller and tried the inlet hose in a bucket of water thing and she pump water. I only let it run for about 5 seconds but she was pumping. So now since i got the hoses off i will replace those as they are showing signs of wear. I hope i have this thing figured out, i am planning on putting her in the water again this weekend, rain or not. I will let you know how it goes. Again thank you Craig.

While Miles is right, I hate to see the impeller vane's installed wrong and have to flip over to go the correct direction.

This could very well be part of your problem with the impeller self distructing.

Figure out which way the motor turn's and then the correct rotation of the pump.

Install the impeller with the vane's so they will NOT flip over, also lube the impeller with some white lithum grease when you install it.

SHE WORKS!!!! Put her in the water today for about 45 minutes while she was still on the trailer fired her up and ran it for about 30 minutes. The temp only got as high as just below half and then started to drop abit. I will take her for her maiden voyage thursday afternoon proably, for a shake down, if all goes well she will be heading to nantucket for the weekend. Thanks for all the help guys, especially you miles. What a great site, thanks trayder!!

Chance,
Glad you got things going.
I can't help but add, I may be of the extreme, but I pull the raw water system apart every year, including manifolds, risers and inspect the cooler inlets. The manifolds and risers get looked at and re-painted and the pump gets pulled and impeller replaced every other year.
The cooling system is probably the most important and can get clogged or corrosion can take over quickly. The fuel system is probably next in line.
Anyway, you probably learned some things and thanks to the help of Miles, you got through it.

Thanks Mark, that is all good advice and i will probably start following that schedule after this year. Being in the Coast Guard we pretty much live by the idea of preventitive maintenance. Mark, I was actually down your neck of the woods today working some of the buoys in the eastern and western channels, pretty nasty area down there if your not used to it.
