Re: Seabird
I have a 23' sitting in the yard for future resto (unless I should be so lucky to find a 23' SC project hull for low bucks... unlikely).
SeaBirds were good boats during their time, built in Hialeah (sp) Florida. Mostly see 23' boats, but they built a 21 and a 27. I think they went out of business somewhere in the early 80's, same deal as a bunch of smaller builders because of the economy. Supposively OMC bought the 21 foot mold and made test boats for engine testing. There is a small site on the net for SeaBirds, and a someone had some neat "test boat" photos. The 23 footer is a stringerless hull, relying on a balsa core and inner liner for strength. Deep V (24° deadrise), very wide bow flair. Some feel this was inivative for late 60's early 70's boats, mixed feelings on my part. I would only guess the 27 used the same construction process... I believe all SeaBirds were I/O. If you see one hanging outboards, would have been a conversion at some point. I know mine had the OMC drive, but not sure of the engine make (long gone). |

Re: Seabird
Yeah well, it looks like my cousin let this one slip threw his fingers. I knew about it last week, but didn't know the manufacturer til today.
Looks like it could have been a good score. All the ones on boattrader are i/o's, this one has straight shaft's.

Re: Seabird
Well built and a very good ride. Most were IO's but I know they built some OB's in the late 70's. I lusted for a 21' CC with 200 OB new at a local dealers around that time. Very pretty hull. I think Answer is off the same molds.

Craig, Phoenix bought the Seabird 28 mold and made their 29' flybridge with it. My guess is that the Phoenix 27 and 32 are based on the same basic design, but their 29 was a direct knockoff of the Seabird hull. I have the V-24 Mariner, which is a 23' CC, and the ride is outstanding. It was converted from I/O to notched OB a few years ago, so I have a good transom and a newer fuel tank to boot. I'm pleasantly surprised by how well this boat has held up since '72, considering all the balsa coring that I'm sure is pretty wet by now. |

Re: Seabird
Looks like it is time for someone to start a Classic Seabird site, and start "flying" off this site!
