Default Re: Power for 20 Master Angler

Just my opinion, I had a 115 on my 18 and it was OK but we are talking a 20 MA with a T Top and I personally think it needs more power. Will it get on plane and run sure, just think it would handle much better with more power, top speed is not the reason I say it will handle better. You want the boat getting up on the deeper deadrise of the hull for cruising speed, plus if your cruise RPM is 4800 vs 3800 it will use more fuel, with a 4S that would be offset but thats not why you pay extra for 4S.

I have a 20 SF with an older 130 Yamaha 2S and this is plenty of power for the hull. I had an old Merc 150 on my last hull, and it went about 44 mph; the new boat does just over 40 mph (38 knots). The T top will add weight and drag, but it should be okay with the 115. There is a guy here in Britsol that runs a 20 SF with a Yam 90 and he has no problems, even though he loads it up and uses it as a ferry to Hog Island.

I think for these hulls, the bigger issue is that you do not want the weight of a 6 cyl engine on the back. I think the ride is much better with the 4 cyl, and the Suzy is a light motor, probably very similar to my 96 Yam.

Theres a Yammi 115 master angler near me. He said its no speed demon but it gets up and goes, there are quite a few 20' SF's up here to with 115 Suzis on them.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll be looking at engines from the 115 to 140ish range. I've actually been looking at the Evinrude Etecs.

From what I hear they are awesome and very competitive in every aspect to 4s except much less weight/HP ratio. Only some minor issues usually due to rigging issues, I guess all the new motors are a tad finiky on the initial set up.

Alex,

I am repowering my 76 20'MA. I am removing an old Evinrude 235 and replacing with a new 175 hp E-Tec. I will let you know the performance in a month or so.

Thats some serious power! I was looking at the 115 and 150 for my boat. When I spoke to the Evinrude dealer he said he would rig the motor for an additional $ 700 bucks and that included everything.

I've decided against buying a used outboard. I did it before and I had nothing but trouble since. Besides I'm taking my time and doing a very thorough and nice job on my boat, so If I get a good deal why not treat myself to a new motor.
