When my 20SF went through the rehab, I raised the OEM
boxes to gunnel height. The port side which has a hatch on top is for access to the TCW oil tank. The starboard side has the same size hatch on the front which has the Bennett trim reservoir and the water seperating fuel filter. I like having the space just for those items.... ![]() ![]() See ya, Ken

I find that they take up a lot of valuable deck space and when I get new guys on the boat, they ALWAYS stumble on them.
If you raised them to the gunnel, and kept the same depth and width, they would be HUGE. IMO, they would take up too much space, I would decrease the size. Some of the other members did that, and it's my plan as well. Either way, you'll have a great boat ![]() Lloyd

Ken,
Did you bring yours straight up? Or did you decrease the length fore/aft? From the pic, it looks like they are cut back a little. Thanks, Lloyd

Lloyd, I cut them back to the best of my recollection.
(I'm old now) approx. 5 inches. As I said the Merc oil tank fits nicely port and the trim pump and fuel filter in the starboard. Keeps everything dry... See ya, Ken

Ken,
And they say that memory is the second thing that goes ![]() ![]() Thanks for the reply, I like your concept of having some space for equipment. IMO, yours looks like about the max size they should be. Lloyd

OK Question----I bought the plywood for the deck yesterday I bought 3/8 AC fir it seems it is way to "thin" what has everyone been using to replace their decks. I plan on putting 1 layer of cloth on the underside and 2 or 3 layers of mat on the top. It looks like 1/2 inch plywod was used on the original deck? I have been told it is 3/8 though?

Well reelclassic, back when a 3/8's was a true 3/8's
just like a 2x4. Lumber sizes have as you know have been reduced. Personally I used 3/4 marine ply just on the lower decking, not on the front platform. This gives you plenty of meat to screw down the console, T-top etc.. The rest was 1/2 in marine ply. I epoxied the underside of the raw wood. The little bit of weight difference is a trade off of the fastening capabilities. You would be OK with 1/2in., but not 3/8's IMO See ya, Ken

Thats what we determined that back then 3/8 was 3/8. If I used it i was going to double up under the console and where the leaning post will go but I think I'm going to go with at least 1/2" maybe 5/8" thanks

Question....What type of fairing compound do you guys recommend. I will probably basicly skim coat the whole deck once i get it in and some other places on the cap and wherever else I need. How much should I get? I have seen several kinds online in 1 or 1.5 gallon kits will that be enough? Thanks
