Default Coast Guard boarding & hull number question?

We were boarded by the Coast Guard this pass weekend in the Gulf, I am pleased to say we passed the inspection with out any major issues !!!

But one thing they questioned was my hull number on my registration, they said it appeared to be missing one number. They tried to verify the number by looking at the back of the boat but didn't see it there... they didn't didn't seem to be overly concerned about it and moved on with their inspection.

Where is the number located on 1974 23' CC

The only place on mine ('73 23') I know of is starboard side transom toward the top. How many charachters did the CG think it's supposed to be?

Somewhere on this site I believe there was a discussion of how the serial numbers were determined at the time of construction. Over the years I believe the scheme of determination changed slightly either because of company ownership changes or CG regs regarding hull numbers.

Regardless, in any event you should be able to find the discussion and using the applicable schema determine what your hull number should be and compare it to what appears on your hull. The only thing that I can think of that might explain an apparent short count of digits is if your hull construction unit number is a single or double digit number such as the 3rd hull in xx month of the 18th in such xx month.

Check it out and if you get stuck maybe we can get some more help for you.

You gotta love this site just for the co-operative base of knowledge! I'm sure someone more knowledgeable that I will chime in with a helpful comment or two.

I will post my hull number from my registration when I get back in town Friday night, that may help.

I have my opinion on why I was stopped boarded...girls in bikinis.... I may be wrong, because on the way back in I saw they had a couple other boats stopped. The were using what looked like a 30' boat and larger 50' boat...

Yeah, I was boarded by the CG on my flats boat in Iaslamorada. They were in a small inflatable and "pulled me over" with blue lights flashing about a half a mile from the shore. Wierd situation, I asked them if they were from the Islamorada CG station and they said no, from key West. I then asked them if that wasn't a rather long haul in an 18' boat and they told me there was a "mother ship" a couple of miles away. The only thing that pissed me off was the two officers who got on board had on black boots in full gear and as you can expect they left marks all over the floor of the boat. They were very professional and nice, however I told them they had no business boarding with black soled boots that would mark up someone's boat. Just a strange incident.

You were boarded by officers, and not enlisted personnel? That is REALLY strange.

USCG has the lowest officer to enlisted ratio of any US armed service. Most CG vessels under 87' are COMMANDED by senior enlisted personnel. The Marine Protector class patrol vessels (87') like the one in the photo above only have one officer permanently assigned.

Only vessels 87' and up have permanent commanders, all under have assigned mission commanders, usually PO2 or higher in rank.

My cousin, as a newly-made Ensign, served as the Exec on the Cape Shoalwater for a year back in the mid-80's, and was one of only two commissioned officers on board with an enlisted crew of 18. She usually only had one officer, a lieutenant assigned as captain. The only time she got a second officer was when some new ensign got asigned, and had to take an Deck Officer training tour at sea.

Boy the C.G. must have got some heat from the top brass lately. I also got stopped by a 87 footer out of Miami on Friday I was 10 miles from shore. They just asked me some questions and let me go after they confirmed my registration over the VHF on channel 16 I was not actually boarded. I told them I was checked out approx one year ago at a dock so they must have pulled up the info. When I was stationed on a 95 footer in 1968 we never boarded any small craft unless we knew they were carrying drugs or Cubans coming over. The woman C.G. rep. I talked to over the VHF was not very friendly AT ALL even when I told here I was stationed at the same base and pulled the same duty back in my day on a 95 footer. We knew if you alienate the public by being a S.O.B. you won’t get much help later from the ones you just alienated.

Guess she's sold on "an army of one" rather than winning over "hearts and minds," eh?
