The welder where I work will spray "Easy Off" (oven cleaner) on the areas to be welded. Takes the finish down to bare aluminum ready to weld after cleaning with acetone. Takes the anodization right off. When I replaced my fuel tank I cut it up before scrapping. I was amazed how bright the inside was, as fresh as the day it was made. Made me wonder if replacement was really necessary. Did pay for some of the beer.

I’m not sure if mine was original, but I too was amazed at how clean the inside was. All leaks and holes were from the outside in. My brothers tank, built by Sunshine 9 years ago, has some kind of growth going on inside it. And he only ever ran non-ethanol. It’s a horrible mess. Engine can’t run ten minutes before water separator fully clogs. Now he’s fishing with a twelve gallon tank. Sucks.
