i've installed quite a few of these-they're an excellent choice...
i'm really not sure what problems could arise with popping the hole in the hull for the 'ducer ?

it's a pretty straight forward operation-select location-smooth out any imperfections on the inside surface,cut a "back up" ring for the inside-i like and use starboard,correct size hole saw,and have at it...a little 3m 5200 adhesive/sealer on all surfaces...again,pretty straight forward operation...no real cause for concern...

Life is full of choices - mine was not to drill.
I've drilled a number of holes in as many boats all without problems. I didn't say either way was better than another - the question was asked and I answered.
