Re: 23 Rebuild
Close to putting the new sole down :) tanks are glassed in. made an ice box in the bow. All the buoyancy foam is in, I filled along the outside of the stringers, there really was not any room for anything else, plus there was not a good way to drain the empty space.
I have decided to make a leaning post/live well and forgo the big transom live well - will use the transom space for a fish box. Moving that weight forward did wonders for my weights ! With the way I have it now, the boat should sit on the same trim angle as a stock 23 with motor hanging directly on transom. Hopefully (if I have saved some weight) it will sit a that same angel, but 1/2" to 1" higher. I bought a used console of CL that was very near to what I would have built - saved me some time. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_173.jpg because I dont have a liner bonded to the hull, I needed to extend the longitudinal stiffeners. Made some stringer extensions. 2" foam covered with 4 layers 1708 (foam is just there for a shape, non-structural) http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_153.jpg foaming in chases - was able to get two 2" into each side :) http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_160.jpg glassing in tanks http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_164.jpg then they are coated in the coal tar to seal it all up - should drain off very easy http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_169.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_167.jpg ice storage box located just forward of box stringers, sits on the stringer extensions I made, also there is a full transverse frame/bulkhead from the tip of the stringer extensions. The space all under the ice box is filled with foam. It not a huge space but it should hold 10 bags of ice to be used in the transom fish box as needed. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_183.jpg Will be looking for rigging ideas at Miami boat show. |

Nice work and good progress. I think you're right that the fish box in the liner had a structural role. I think your new ice chest will save you some stress cracks in the hull. You mentioned that you think the boat will ride higher and sit at about the same trim as the original configuration. Are you able to calculate center of buoyancy and center of gravity so you have a good idea how she'll trim out? Dave |
Re: 23 Rebuild
Hi Dave,
No, I did not do all the work to do hydrostatics. Did not feel it was necessary. I just made a little spreadsheet with weight locations and found moments, then compared to identical spreadsheet with data from a stock 23' |
Re: 23 Rebuild
Progress has been slow lately. We are epoxy gluing down the sole today, so Im getting closer.
A couple weeks ago I picked up a console/t-top and leaning post/livewell. It came off a 23 seacraft from Tampa. They are in great shape, will need new upholstery on the leaning post, but that about it. I had planned to build the console and hard top, but with spring here I will not have the time (work), so finding these items ready to install is going to make finishing a lot easier. I will paint the leaning post and console after they are glassed to the hull. Maybe someday I will have the aluminum powder coated - but thats for later. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_215.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_214.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_216.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_219.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_217.jpg So after the sole in down and glassed, I will be glassing in hull side stiffeners and making frames. stiffeners are from compsys http://boatbuildercentral.com/prodde...reform_TR_6008 web page http://boatbuildercentral.com/prodim...r-4007_200.jpg The other console is for sale. I will post it in the for sale section, will donate part of proceeds to classicseacraft.com ;) |
Re: 23 Rebuild
progress comes in small fits.
The hull stiffeners are in as are the frames. I made hollow glass box frames, used a mold to make a shape out of light cloth, conformed to hull, then covered in 2 x 1708, then filled with foam. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_283.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_278.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_277.jpg Made scupper drains. Used a form to make glass tubes which are epoxied and glassed in. Scuppers will have flappers on the outside, and I will be able to plug the drain form the inside if need be. My sole is +2" from standard, so i should be pretty good. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_300.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_302.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_305.jpg Ordered a bracket which should be here in a week or so. |
Re: 23 Rebuild
been a long time since I have updated the thread. I will just copy my thread from other forum..
closing in the transom, box in middle is fish box. Tabbed in with double layers of biax tape, the covered with some 6 oz. cloth. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_398.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_397.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_403.jpg closing in fish box. bottom of box is made from a 3/4" nida-core panel with 4mm Okoume on each side (scrap from my console/box on my fs17 skiff), the sides are then lined with a layer of 1/2" H80 Divinycell glued in, all filleted and covered with a 12 oz bix (bottom is double layered). http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_413.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_416.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_417.jpg experimenting more with hatches, have two of these ready to go in. ... http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_415.jpg Secured down the 3" angle for the console and leaning post. In each case, I drilled holes (double the diameter of the faster being used) through the sole and through the stringer, then using an Allen wrench attached to the drill to auger out a large void into the foam. Void was about 3" to 4" diameter and a little deeper than the bolt will sit. For the console the mounting of the plate was pretty straight forward, just had to cut a little off one of the angles so it would fit around the chase tubes. The angles for the leaning post took a little creativity. There is not enough room on the insode of the live well to have the flange of the angle - it would not leave any room to run drain/fill hose, also the inside of the well is not side enough to reach the stringers, so I reversed the angle and routed out the sole so I could bolt them right to the stringers. I will fill this void with glass so that only to top of the angle is sticking out above the sole - the sides of the livewell slide right over it :) port side angle, the black under the sole is the top of the fuel tanks. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_395.jpg starbord side, you can see the recess better http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_394.jpg dry fit before, you can see how the livewell sits on top of angle http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_344.jpg console mounts. The console will also be glassed to sole inside and out. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_400.jpg |

Re: 23 Rebuild
thanks Brian :) ......
more fairing....... hatches are all glued/glassed down now. A little more fairing on the inside sides and we will glass down the leaning post and console. [image]http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/userpics/12155/normal_seacraft23_shine_442.jpg[/image] forward hatch. When the gasket is glued on it will sit flush with deck/sole [image]http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/userpics/12155/normal_seacraft23_shine_442.jpg[/image] [image]http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/userpics/12155/normal_seacraft23_shine_441.jpg[/image] last of the hatch covers. I pop them out after the laminating in the top skin, then core/glass the rest. I built the first one entirely in the mold and it was a bit of pain to remove. [image]http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/userpics/12155/seacraft23_shine_451.jpg[/image] this little hatch fits really tight between the bilge hatch and the leaning post. in fact the flange will partially be cored ny the rear of the leaning post/live well - you can see the sharpie marker on the hatch outlining where the leaning post will fall. These two rear hatches will not be used very much. I think I will use a latch on both sides so the hatch can be removed completely for better access. somethign like these, with the gasket should be pretty close to water tight. Re: 23 CC rebuild - shine
hey very nice build so far i was wondering what did you do your middle stinger out of. i need to replace mine and i like how you did yours is that safe the do it like that it look like pvc?
|
Re: 23 CC rebuild - shine
Hi George,
I made calculations for hull stiffness, based on frame/stringer spacing and hull thickness. According to those calculations (with my stiffener location which is not the same as stock SC), the center stringer was not required. I made the PVC pipe center stringer to provide a little stiffness, plus its a drainage to the bilge for the rest of the compartments. Its made from a 4" piece of drain field PVC (light weight), its then covered in two layers of 1708. My project hull did not have a liner. I added frames to my boat, between the stringers, which adds a lot of stiffness. If I had replaced the original liner, I would not have been able to fit in the frames. In that case I would have definitely replaced the center stringer as original. Hope that helps BTW, something is wrong with my image tags in the above post, i tried several different ways to do it, but no luck. Im a little new to this thread posting thing, so maybe I will figure it out :D |
Re: 23 CC rebuild - shine
with out the liner would this make the boat easyer to crack and wouldnt that take off alot a weight

with that big of a weight change how much would that effict the ride of the boat. i know a heavery boat handles waves better.

uhhh thats a bad ass build. How many years of experience go into a project such as this?

----- How many years of experience go into a project such as this?
Thank you. I have rebuilt one other boat from the hull up, made numerous repair, and built a few boats from scratch (one off designs). Im not a professional boat builder, but I do sell materials to them so I have to know what I'm doing :) Rebuilding a boat is well within the grasp of anyone with a little bit of handiness and a lot of willingness to learn. With the internet, everything you need to know is right there, just takes wanting to learn it. Primer is all sanded to 320, boat will get its first taste of sterling topcoat next week. plan is to paint the bracket and hull outside first (Ice Blue), then paint the inside (Matterhorn White), then light gray Kiwigrip non-skid. I may spray the inside sides, just because of all the inside radii. Hull will definately be rolled and tipped though. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_566.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_564.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_563.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_565.jpg next pictures I post should be good :) |
Shine, this restoration is coming along nicely. A lot of thought and hard work. Good luck getting her painted and rigged!
|
Joel,
Looking good, man. That structural grid you added to the sides looks strong and light. But I don't envy you the fairing and sanding it took to make it look so pretty. Can't wait to see it with the top coat on. Dave |
Why the decision to roll and tip the hull when you have the capabilty of spraying?
|
What did the console come off of? Kinda looks like a something from a Contender.
|
sides and brackets are painted. Only took two coats, rolled and tipped. A little dust on the paint, will have to buff that out later.
http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_569.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_568.jpg Inside will be Matterhorn white, non skid will be a lite gray color Quote:

Looks great, I really like the roll and tip myself. When you get a knack for it it looks great. So much less prep than spraying, let alone if your in a yard with other boats right on top of you.
|
not to mention its illegal to spray in most places now unless you have a booth. A guy just yesterday told me of friend of his that was caught and fined for spraying in his warehouse.
|
she's coming along nicely Shine...looking forward to seeing pic's of it in the water.

More slow, but steady progress.
Bracket is on. Deck has non-skid and starting to get hardware. i will hold off on putting non-skid down on the sole until Im finished rigging. Non-skid is Kiwigrip, my business distributes it. The hatch covers on the sole have been fitted with seals/gaskets, I just have to put on the latches and piano hinges. The last few pictures are of the transom box hatch covers being made. I have the rubrail, its the same light gray color as the non-skid - should look pretty good http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_605.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_606.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_598.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_599.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_600.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_601.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_594.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_595.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_597.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_612.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_613.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_614.jpg |
I really really like it, your nonskid layout is great imho. The hatches and receivers look great in there. Can't wait to see the nonskid.
|
I wish I had the skills/knowledge to build something like this. Looks great!
|
Planning on using that same non-skid on my skiff.. Looks Awesome, can't wait to see the rest of the decks.
|
which hull was that originally a savage or sceptre?
|
wow! nice work.
|
Thank you for the kind words.
"which hull was that originally a savage or sceptre?" Its a 23' center console, original hull and cap. Rebuilt without the liner and raised stringers by 2" |
running out of excuse to not buy motor....
rubrail is on. Its a light gray color and it matches the non skid even better than I had hoped. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_634.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_635.jpg backing plates for the thru hulls, small one is pick up large one is drain. The drain thru-hull is recessed/flush on the bottom. They are glassed to the hull and covered with a coat of gray pigmented epoxy - like the rest of the bilge. You can also see my bilge hatch is removable :), I have always hated not having everything within easy reach, wont be a problem on this one. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_626.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_627.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_630.jpg mounting all the deck hardware... http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_619.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_620.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_628.jpg |
Sweet!!
|
Looking awesome!! Can't wait to see the decks with the Kiwi grip.
|
The level of craftsmanship in this rebuild is incredible. Its so pretty that I d be afraid to run it for fear of scratching it. Hope mine looks half as good when its done

Mounted all the thru-hulls, Im shopping for a motor now ! |
good to hear. i always feel that if a boat is built well and treated decently it should withastand the abuse without too many problems. My Venture was over 15 years old and most people thought it was a 3 or 4 yr old boat and i didnt baby it in the least

thru hulls are in
http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_649.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_650.jpg grab rail installed, and gunnel trim put up. the trim doesn't match (its an off white), but I plan to cover it eventually with coaming pads all around. Front half of the boat is done :) http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_648.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_653.jpg http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_654.jpg trim tabs installed. Went with Lenco tabs with the low profile (edge) mount. Found a great deal on them online, I think it was $700 for the whole kit including the nicer rocker panel switch. It was less than our dealer price from our local distributor :!: http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/us..._shine_656.jpg Put a deposit on a used F225 yamaha 4 stroke. It an older motor (2004) but it has under 400 hours and Im buying from a dealer who will hang it and give short warranty. I wanted to go with a used OX66 to see if I liked the boat, but with the prospect of $5 gas this summer a four stroke start to pay for itself pretty quick. Judging by some reviews of similar size/weight boats, I think I can get around 3.5 to 4 mpg at 26 mph with this boat so long as I dont overload with people/gear. I would be very happy with 3.5. I have a friend who has same hull (newer/bigger version) and he gets 2.2 mpg with twin 150 2 strokes at 30mph Now I really have to get things wrapped up. Still have to finish non-skid, install fuel filters, install hydraulic helm and lines. My plan is to get the motor rigged and running, then put up the t-top and finish rigging all the electrical systems after that. |
Looking good shine.
Curious why you chose to install your tabs on center panels instead of outer? Bracket or scupper in the way of actuators or theoretical? cheers, McGill |
