Hey Dirt, I'm looking at the pics where you tabbed the transom with the full skins. Did you use these full skins to tab into the bottom of the hull and around each side? Are all five skins tabbed around the side and bottom corners? I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I am taking notes from your work, and getting a lot of good information :D

The pic is actually just a pic of the prep, hadnt been glassed yet.

When I put the transom in the boat it already had 3 layers of 1700 on each side of the core, (remember the whole outer skin got taken off). Then it got another full layer with tabs on the inside, and 3 more tabs after that. The outside wasnt touched until now, well except for some wraps over the splashwell.

Glassed it here, 2 more 17oz with tabs and some finish cloth on the transom face. So just 2 tabs on to the outside of the hull. Thats about all you can really do as thin as these hulls are... Final count : 4 layers inside, 5 and some finish cloth outside. Plus all the tabbing inside. Splashwell and knees/stringers all double tabbed 17oz.

Yea in the grand scheme an extra few hours taking all that gelcoat off will soon be long forgotten. No way i was gonna prime and paint over it! Dis one is mines by the way...

Layed up one side today in 3.25 oz cloth. Wiped some fairing compound on that transom tie-in and went wet-on-wet with the glass (thats why its so shiny in that one spot on this photo)Ill hit it with the DA and then spray some high build... Shit lays down niiiice, hopefully itll get rid of some of the original roving print thru.

Good luck with that, The print threw is a pain to get gone. On one of my old hulls I sanded into the gel fairly hard with 120 grit with a Hutchins line sander and then added 5 layers of 2000e primer (grey and then white back and forth to be able to see high spots or the roven) blocking down between the layers of primer trying to get the roven print threw out. About 2 years latter it started to show up again slightly. I should of did like you and removed all the gel completely.

Yea that shrunken old gelcoat is what the problem really is. The stuff on this hull looked like a dried up lake bed or something hahah. Hopefully gonna let some high build fly this weekend...on the hullsides anyway, bottom needs some more work sharpening the steps back up and whatnot.

steel686 05-07-2020 11:13 AM

Can't wait to see some primer on there. I keep going back to post#64 of Squid Lips and clicking back and forth. Big payoff and milestone on your way to 7/4 deadline!

Ya know Dirt, two things always happen when you are doing a boat project, especially a SeaCraft, the target date is always passed and the budget is always passed! :)

Yep just slid a pvc pipe inside to keep it rigid and waxed it up. I hate those plastic flanges

dirtwheelsfl 06-07-2020 08:39 PM

On those yea... Made some sanding blocks that matched the deadrise.

The rest of the bottom is mostly longboards with an 8" DA and air file mixed in. Constantly checking with straightedges in all directions. It's "blueprinted" as they say.

Hullsides all handblocked. Dont want it looking like a funhouse mirror ya know...

He's crafty like that. He makes one off boards. Makes perfect sense when you have
foam scraps you can put to good use.

He would have been a great sculptor in Roman times.

Dirtwheels the Maestro!

Fantastic Chris-
Probably good for me you couldn’t work spraying my transom into your que. I couldn’t afford such excellence. (The only quote I was able to even get in the local area was $600 with my paint.). So rolled it, not perfect, but is only the a$$ end. Maybe hit it again nexr spring if I can get a better paint match. I do realize the space suits and gear you need to use to spray these wicked paints and avoid a short life span.

Most race hulls are not blueprinted to that level.

strick 06-17-2020 10:44 PM

Good lord...wax that thing and pop a mold off it...the original hull was not that perfect...set up your shop light and shave off that reflection in the morning...

strick

dirtwheelsfl 06-18-2020 12:37 PM

The paint shows better in the pics! Got a bunch of dust and a couple runs in it...

Rushed and got the hullsides done yesterday, theyre gonna have to be redone. Didnt do enough test sprays, thought i was good to go, had the fluid knob turned out a bit too much on first tack coat and it was run city. Looked like an avalanche of paint on the first 6ft. It looks good from about 5ft away in the right angle hehhh. Its awlgrip so no cut n buff. Will probably reshoot in awlcraft (had the awlgrip kicking around already so i used it).

Gonna wait til the insides ready for paint and reshoot hullsides then i reckon :(

Terry thats why im nota painter, and hate painting! Its nerve racking. Too much to easily go wrong and when it does its usually $$$
