I can't wait till the finished product is at the boat show. You get that Gucci Stamp now , maybe two when your done or three.......

dirtwheelsfl 06-19-2020 09:21 AM

The rest of it really isnt bad. But i cant leave those runs! Theyre real hard to photograph, gotta see in person. I know i can lay down a 6" job... I painted the steps white too, should contrast more when its right side up.

I like the "Boatpix" aerial photos.
Nice job Chris !!

strick 08-01-2020 07:48 PM

That is going to be one cool little skiff when you get it finished...I like the toe kick...studying your tools..looks like you mostly use air..and of course a lot of manual boarding...I recently bought one of those long air sanders but have yet to try it out. Curious about the spray rails...does it change the ride at all? hard turns? I was tinkering with the idea on my 20 MA that has been sitting and in need of attention. Nice work as usual!

strick

dirtwheelsfl 08-02-2020 09:29 AM

Thanks gents.

Gotta use pneumatic. Lighter, smaller, fits in tight spots. Not gonna board much in here. I will start with one sometimes just to see whats going on and where i need to focus w the machines. On the big surfaces ill usually start with an 8” electric sander/polisher with 60 grit. The air file/board is great. Gotta keep it moving though.

The consensus is the rails definitely help i reckon. Got to watch em in action for awhile on my 20 when we towed it, knocked the water down quite a bit. The ones on here are even wider and turned down a bit more. As far back as they are on this one they may add a bit of stern lift too which probably wont be a bad thing. We will see!!

Its really the perfect spot to re-use that original anchor door! My switches will be mounted on the backside of the door too so they should like the lip on top to shed water. Form and function!

The vents have a pvc 90 and some pipe extending up a bit into the spaces. Theyll double as a place to route drain hoses from rodholders/cleats/cupholders etc. I holesawed the skin on the backside and took the core out, then glued in a disc of 1/8” thick or so glass just to get more thickness in the front skin for the holes.

Got a g2 150HO waiting here since before the french canadian cowards pulled the plug. Standard bracket, no integrated steering to save a few pounds. I have plans to throw an extra battery up under the big bomar hatch up front if need be... i feel like ive got enough fuel and water forward but we will see...

Looking good Chris! Do you have any chaffing protection in mind for the bow or just the small toe rails in place? I had the standard 18" SS ones bent by a machinest to match the top deck curve.

dirtwheelsfl 08-19-2020 01:05 PM

Not really chuck... the cleat is super far forward so i dont think itll need it. Rubrails pretty thick too so thatll help keep it out too.

Don't know how I missed the door transplant! very cool...I was thinking that this boat probably the coolest restore I've seen here and from what you had to work with in the beginning it really is an understatement to say that you are highly skilled...

Yes Dirtwheels is highly skilled, creative, an artist, a maestro- the superlatives go on & on. I have had the pleasure of seeing his progress personally a few times. On one visit he wasn’t there yet so His friend at his worksite chatted. He said he saw Chris on a step ladder staring at the boat. What are you doing? The answer was something like just imagining or creating!

Boatbuilding is 10% thinking, 10% building and 80% sanding

Tribute is starting a 72. They build. You write the check.

Now we mere mortals can go a few different ways.
Cash, credit, or second mortgage.

I like cash.

Check? Whats that?!

Theres probably 5k in materials in the boat. The shit that makes it go is what really costs money! If I could stroke a check, theyd be one of the only places id have build me one haha

I dont keep receipts unless its something i might return. Sleep better at night that way :)
But looking at all the junk out there going for 40k really makes me sleep better...

When the wife asks. Oh I had that already. Or it was cheap. Bless her heart when she goes out she even asks me what kind of sandpaper I need...

I was advised that the livewell needs a standpipe to keep it from overflowing while runnning so this is what i came up with. Threads are poured epoxy (1.5 NPT), reverse scoop is made with epoxy pressed on with a pvc pipe form cut on an angle...

I've been going back through this build and Squidlips and was wondering why you didn't core the hull sides this time around? I'm on the fence trying to decide if I'm going to core mine.

The lips didnt have any knees or structure/support in the back half so it got cored. This one has the bulkheads, console and shelf all giving some structure/support. The deck being so high too really helps. Went back and forth on a shelf on stbd side too but just decided the juice wasnt worth the squeeze.

100% Sandy! U can get the primer sanded out to what u think is perfection, hose it off, looks flawless, then when paint goes on u see all kinds of flaws. Redid the hullsides in awlcraft but theyre good enough, not gonna bother buffing.
Boats all painted now, minus nonskid which im doing today. Inside has a few runs and some peel but it aint a yacht!

So I've never used Awlcraft...how do you like it? does it even compare to the durability of Awlgrip? what would you say the benefits/pros/cons of either are? been tempted to try Awlcraft because I hear you can repair it easier? I know how Awlgrip is really tough and have been happy with it..can it be wet sanded and buffed?

strick

Blackfin26 11-07-2020 08:03 PM

Just a great build and finish thread. And LOL on "not gonna bother buffing"! You'd need to buff those hull sides with pixie dust and unicorn tails.

Ive found that if you look at awlcraft the wrong way you will scratch it lol. You can buff it and whatnot if it didnt come out smooth enough but id rather live with the straight out of the gun finish of awlgrip on the inside of a boat. Hullsides yes use awlcraft for sure.

I find it sprays and lays down a bit "lighter" than awlgrip, and doesnt like to sag as much, even though im thinning the awlcraft 33% and the awlgrip only about 20%. I do think the awlcraft is easier to spray overall, you can really lay it on.

Im not repairing paint nicks thru the life of the boat, im beating it up and repainting in 8 yrs so i like awlgrip better for insides and nonskid.

Ive done a few boats in awlcraft inside and they still arent too beat up years later, but i bet an awlgrip inside would be a good bit less beat up...

Most pro guys i know dont spray much or any awlgrip anymore, its all awlcraft. People still call it an "awlgrip paint job" but its usually awlcraft, cuz they can put an extra coat on and fix any flaws.

I can paint , but im not a painter if yano what i mean!
