Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Having read many (all) of the posts on repowering, I find myself having a tough time making a decision on a new engine. I am sold on 4 stroke, but torn between Yamaha (115 or 150) and Suzuki (140).
The only thing wrong with the Suzuki I can find, is that parts/serviceablity could be an issue, and that the horsepower may be slightly overstated. I will be running the boat up on Cape Cod (Chatham), where there are limited dealers... I like the Yamaha 150, but am concerned about putting another 60 lbs on a 78 Sceptre with original transom and the impact on the bailing system. The 115 weighs the same as the Suzuki (406 lbs), but here again I give up some HP. From a price point, looks like the 150 is about $1500 -2000 more than the other two. I am making a decision in the next week or so, and thought it might be worth "kicking it around" one more time with "the experts". All comments welcomed.. Thanks. Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Heggie,
As you probably know, i have the Suzy DF140. I struggled with the same decision, as i am sure many others have. But the bottom line is the $1.5 - 2K more and the added weight of (466 - 420) 46 lbs of Yamaha was the factor. But you do need to consider the diff in HP if it is worth it for you. I have been hearding 10% diff off Suzuki and 10% high on Yamaha, so thats 126HP - 165HP = 40HP!! That adds up, is it true?? Maybe i should of had the dealer dyno the two before i picked?? The great trouble free track record of the DF140, 6 year warr, good price, low weight is tough to beat. I used the diff of $$ for new hydraulic steering and now i can pack on 46 lbs without feeling guilty! The other advice is maybe wait. I heard that Suzuki might be coming out this year with a DF150 & DF175 and pumped out of the same block/weight as the DF140 ... that might be stretching this block? This will help guys that want more ponies at the same weight .... i would be tempted but after others run the possible bugs out for a few years. Has anyone else have any details on this or am i talking crap again .... ?? hope some of this rambling helps ... Nick BTW: i would stick the min HP rule(especially on a 4-stroke) of Max HP x 80%, so 175HP x 80% = 140HP |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
h.h.
I am facing the same decision with my 76 20 cc, I am 95% sure I will be buying the suzuki this weekend. Between the weight, price, and 6 yr. warranty it seems like the way to go.I'm from Long Island and have 2 dealers within 6 miles of my house.I've heard great things about the 140 both from people that have it and my local Yamaha Dealer. One thing that might make me delay is that it was just announced today that the ITC threw out Brunswicks dumping claim against Japanese 4 stroke manufacturers. I'm wondering if this might cause prices to come down, does anyone have an opinion on that? Thanks, Blackfin |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
I, like you, am leaning towards the Suzi. I think we have till the end of March to get the extra 3 years of warranty. I am going to stretch it out a few more weeks, but don't think I can wait months (years) as my boat has no power right now.
Interesting about the dumping case being thrown out. I don't suspect the Japs were worried anyway.... |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Bought my 2005 Suzuki140 last week had it and all guages, binnalce, prop, and wiring harnesses shipped to me from out of state dealer $8,900 total (includes shipping). I will not have to pay sales tax in FL. Best price I could find locally was higher than my total cost for just the engine. There is considerable price competiton on the motor shop around...a local guy on Florida Sportsman forum indicated he got a pair of 140's with 6 year warranty $15,175 plus $200 to ship them (engines only).

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Those prices are much better than I've been quoted....did you find them online?

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Isn't Ryder's Cove Boatyard in Chatham a Suzi Dealer?

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
I am going on my 5th season with the DF115 with out a lick of trouble. I have a friend that has twin DF140's on a Mako 25 and he loves them. The boat isn't a speed demon but he cruises at 24+ mph and the boat tops out in the mid 30's. It sipps fuel, he runs a hundred miles out and back, tolls and burns a 100 gals. Now thats hard to beat.
I'd prefer to have a little more snot on my 23SF, so the new's of a DF150 or 175 is very exciting. Even though I have a four stroker on one boat, I have always been a 2 stroke fan due to the weight to HP ratio. |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Bayracermarine.com (North Carolina)they have online pricing but they can do better…some of the accessories are cheaper at the site referenced on one of the reply's above.
John McKenna, BayRacer Marine,john@bayracermarine.com 252.447.2277 From the Florida Sportsman pair of DF 140 "The quote came from Boat Tune in Orlando. Pair of counter rotating 15,175 plus 200 freight. Ask to speak with Rodney when you call. 1-888-324-8348" |

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
I spoke to Alan over at Ryder's, and he was talking about $11 - 12K for engine, guages, etc, installed. Seemed high, and he indicated he did not do enough volume to see the low prices.... I am going to look into the Bayracers post by JW.
I run out of Harwich/South Chatham, so Ryders is bit out of the way (by boat). I had a great relationship with the guys at Stage Harbor, in fact they sold Seacrafts in the old days, and convinced me to go looking for a redone one. Too bad they only sell the Mercs. Does not sound like Merc will have any mid size 4 strokes anytime soon. It sounds like the best bang for the buck, without giving up quality, is the Suzuki. Now I just need to find a good deal! Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Hi Mike, did you sell'er yet? I was just talking about her today as a matter of fact.
Did my cousin ever get over there? He'll be down next week, I'll give it another plug if the boats still available. |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
finster, No has not sold. Because of the snow there we havent even been down there. Its looks as if were going to have to wait till the snows gone. You cant get the best look until its pulled out of the barn and with snow thats impossible. I think we will be hoping for a spring sale. Just want to let people know that ones around. Thanks for checking up.

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
I love my Suzuki Ryders is awesome too. Also look in Warham theres a big suzuki dealer up there as well. I put 300 hrs on mine in a season and a half love it! Sipps the gas, when Ryders did mine I think I was the SIXTH 20' SeaCraft re power they did. The only problem I've had with it was the key switch stuck when I was flushing it out and it cooked the starter before I could shut it down even running with the started engaged it was still wisper quite so I didn't even notice it. It was fixed with in two days!

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Hey Jon G,
How are you? Haven't seen you around the site in a while. I heard that break on South Beach is starting to fill back in, but it also caused the Southway to shoal up a bit. Have you been over there to check it out? |

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
We were talking with a Suzuki dealer tonight at the show and apparently their coming out with a DF150 to début at the Miami show. It's a different block and the spec's aren't yet known.
I think I would sit tight to see what this is all about before running out and buying a 140. |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
I am interested to hear about info on the Suzuki 150. If it is going to be in production no later than June, that could work out fine. I am a little skiddish about a brand new engine, but going from a 140 to 150 should not be that big a deal, provided they are using the same design.
I did speak to Bayrace in NC, and they are by far the best deal. I will call then next week and see if they have any "scoop" on the 150. Thanks for the feedback. Waiting a few more weeks, is not a problem. |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
It didn't sound like you will be seeing that engine in that time frame. The dealer told us they have no info on that motor, and everything that was mentioned HE said was pure speculation. Like Chris said he felt that the motor would be seen at Miami I guess to be “unveiled”... but dealers wouldn’t see it for a time after that (no specific time). Again the speculation is that this is a brand new motor ... not one bastardized from the 90-140 block. I think he even mentioned they were not even sure of the cylinder config ( 4 5 or 6 cylinders). It was funny / sad as he was one of a couple of vendors we talked about that said to us that we would have more info on the motor before they did. We only got to talking to the dealer as we were checking out B.Potters pilot house on that "other" boat.
Honestly … I would wait to see how these engines fair … Why be the guinea pig. |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
I spent a lot of time earlier this winter struggling with re-power options for my '86 20' cc. I had one dealer tell me he thought Susukis had poor corrosion resistance, particularly with water pump bolts etc.. After I heard this I took Susuki off my list. Any truth to this? I settled on a Yamaha 4-stroke 150, figuring to move my batteries forward and eliminate the oil reservoir to minimize the effect of the extra weight over the stern.

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
I decided to buy the Suzuki yesterday from BayRacer in N.C., my main concern was the weight.I have not heard anything about corrosion problems but I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
I'm going on me fifth season with my df115 and corrosion is a concern. There's a small spot where the steering linkage hooks up but no biggy.
BTW the boat stay in the water 8 months out if the year. |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Finster,
What are you running the DF 115 on? Regarding corrosion, has not been an issue on my 6 year old DF 70, but I was talking to a friend at the Providence Boat Show and he said he is concerned that he may have problems on his Evnrude/Suzuki 50 'cause he didn't know about a zinc in the block, so he never changed it for the first 4-5 years that he's owned the engine. The guy is an independent foreign car mechanic and he said he did a major overhaul on the engine last fall and everything was right up to spec. I'd like to swap my DF 70 (tiller) for a 2005 DF 115, with a wheel, controls, etc. I'm getting prices around 7K; sound right? Any opinions, comments, etc? |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
dcobbett, I have it on a 20' Aquasport. As far as price goes there's probibly other guys here that are more in tune with that than me.

Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Heggie,
Not sure where the Suzuki knowledge is coming from on all these comments about the Suzuki 140 vs Yamaha 150, but these are the facts. Dyno Test Suzuki 140 / 138hp , Yamaha 150 / 148hp. Any motor coming from Japan is allowed a 10% differnce in hp +/-. And you can be sure that the 150 Suzuki will not be out of the same block as the 140. The 140 block is already used for it's little sisters the 115, 90. Buy the Suzuki you get the six year warranty, you get a timing chain not a belt. And you save two to three years in fuel. And don't be afraid to use Atlantic Boats, he is the largest Suzuki dealer in the country. PS |
Re: Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Ended up buying Engine from DF140 from BayRacer Marine in NC. Ended up paying $8699 for engine, gauges, tach, trim guage, volt meter, (alum prop), (engine was $7800). Cost me $177 to ship to Fla, and no tax to boot. I would recomend John to anyone looking at repowering. Now just have to get boat & trailer from Sarasota to Chatham, Ma... It does not sound like shipping is getting cheaper...
