My '78 23 cc seacraft's previous owner for some reason removed the wood rod storage pieces under the gunnels and threw them away, so I have no pattern to build new ones and they provide much needed support to the gunnel. Just wondering if anyone may have any old ones or a pattern for me to use to make duplicates. I am planning to make the new ones out of starboard and can make them with no pattern but would really reduce the cutting and trimming if I could come up with a pattern.

You can have my old wooden ones if you want them. I have a 1971 23cc. If you are going to make new ones out of starboard make sure you use the 3/4" thick.

You can easily make a pattern out of cardboard trimmed to fit with a razor knife and then transfer to the material you are making the supports out of.

I had a pair made last year from 3/4" seafoam starboard for $350. They're still waiting to be installed. On the list for this Spring.-PF

Stoney, you say you have a '71 23' CC. I may be wrong, but I think you have a very rare SeaCraft. Could you give some info and post some pictures in the Photo forum.-PF

Rare indeed!!
There is no hull ID number in the hull. There is an embossed aluminum tag on the underside of the wood cover for the glovebox. The boat rides like a dream but appears to be a long project to get to the beautiful point.
I have done the transom and installed a new low budgetmotor due to cash flow problems (kid in private college).

Most of the classics start out about the same. Take your time, do what you can and do it right. I believe you have the only '71 23' CC on the web site, it's even an outboard. Has it always been an outboard or did you switch from IO. It truly is a classic!-PF

Have you considered replacing with either Taco or Lee rod holders? Check out pictures of Capt. Chuck's boat, for an idea of what they would like. They would screw into the face of the side gunnel that the original holders mounted to. Since you are not replacing with teak, I believe this is a better way to go and may be cheaper in the long run. A pair of Lee's run about 12-14 bucks. Taco's in stainless are a bit more. Dink

I have a little flex in the top of the gunnel. thats the main reason I am interested in putting them back on the boat I'm not shure but from looking at the boat it appears that the rod holders give support to the gunnels to reduce the flex. I actually already have sufficient rod storage, just trying to reduce the flex in the gunnels.

Scott, I've seen brackets placed under the gunnels the same depth as the rod racks to add support. Some people have removed the rod racks in the bow and the gunnel will flex without something under there. It doesn't look bad either. I've seen them made out of teak, made out of starboard you wouldn't notice them at all.

I don't think the flex is caused by deteriorated core material, when someone steps off the dock onto the gunnel it slightly tilts down, there are no apparent soft spots or problem area it apears that all my boats gunnel support comes from the connection where the cap meets the hull. I'm sure that if i removed the cap and replaced the core then reglassed it and added extra support/glass it would be stronger and probably would not flex but that seems like alot of work that I think (correct me please if I'm wrong) could be avoided by replacing the original or installing new brackets.

When I stripped out the transom and removed the livewell, I discovered about 56 holes in the transom. It originally had twins. Mickey Mouse owned it before me and left all the twin gages in the console when they converted to a single 225 Ocean Pro. I am picking one or two major projects a year to bring it back to georgeous. That way I still get to fish.

The Deck Flex was fixed by a friend with a 23CC by installing knees at the front rod storage location made from 3/4 starboard cut at a 45 angle. They are short enough that they are hidden by the deck cap. This is much easier than removing the deck cap and recoring, which is what I did. As long as you dont have soft spots and the balsa core is solid put in the knees and you will gain the stiffness
