Used Seacraft value
Good morning,
I am new to the Seacraft hull and was looking at a 1989, 23 SF hull with a 1989 merc 275 out board. Hull number S1CF3193G889. My question is do the hulls hold there value? Is this a trailerable size, yes my truck can pull the weight? What should we look for when surveying the hull? 1989 Merc is an old engine so any info yu may have about the stress on that outboard pushing this hull would be good as well. Tks your help. This is a great looking boat but on the West Coast our exposure the "Seacraft" is very limited. rgds KE7GCJ |
Re: Used Seacraft value
I paid $8,000 for a 1989 23CC w/ 1989 Yamaha 200 and nice 6000 pound Continental aluminum I-Beam trailer.
Things to look for (carefully and/or with an expert) are the condition of the transom and floor. I had to redo some of the floor panels and replace the gas tank, hoses, wiring, paint, etc., but NOT the transom. Welcome to CSC and good luck with your purchase. |
Re: Used Seacraft value
I owned a 1994 275 Merc on my 23' that I replaced 2 years ago.The 275 is a strong motor, not a real high RPM design, pushed my seacraft in the low 50 MPH range. The motor was LOUD and it does have 6 very big thursty Carburators so don't expect mileage like the newer more efficent designs.
Irregardless of the make a 1989 outboard motor is relativly valueless so if it runs and can push you through the rest of the summer wonderful,You need to factor the cost of a replacement in the near future though. |
Re: Used Seacraft value
Were exactly on the west coast are you? I'm in N.California. PM me if you want and I could go into some detail.

Re:Thank you
thank you for the great info.
I will take a good look at the transom and more likely will have an expert take a peak at the boat. Can you describe what i might see on the Transom or will it take a professional. Again thank you for the info. Dale |
Re: motor info
Again thank you for the info about the motor.
Replacement is definitely going to be an issue and as you suggested I better factor that into the mix if there is going to be fishing and fun in the future. all the best KE7GCJ |
Re: Contact and info
Strick,
Tks, I ma in Seattle and would love to discuss mor fully the boat. I tried to respond with my contact info but it came back to me. My computer skills ar not what they should be. It took me a week to figure out how to play around on the forum. Getting better so I will ask my little sister how to properly PM so that you can keep me on the water in a good boat. rgds KE7GCJ |
Re: Used Seacraft value
Don't add any value for the 275 Merc. If & when it breaks down - expect to junk it. They are not worth putting money into. The blocks were cast in England by Cosworth. They are very prone to corrosion, not to mention that they were not very good performance engines to begin with... :o

Re: Contact and info
I changed my e-mail and I just updated it in my profile. That may have been the problem. Tap the tramsom with the blunt end of a screw driver starting from the bottom and go up. Compare the sound in several different places. If it sounds hollow then the transom is in need of some work. The deck should be solid everywere you walk. Inspect the underside of the hatches and deck cap for signs of rot. everywere there is a screw or bolt is a potential place for water to get into and mess up the wood. If you can send us some pics of the boat close ups etc then we can help you make an educated decision as to it's quality.

Re: You guys are too much
Strick,
Tks, the info. The info and reading the other answers on the forum have really helped me understand the Seacraft and the many issues and pleasures that go along with the boat. I have a sea trial and will spend a few hours looking at the boat on the 9th. Full report and photos to follow. Assuming I can post the photos, my computer skills leave a lot to be desired. The boat will need to come out of the water to facilitate an inspection of the thru hulls. That seems to be a point of concern so will give that special attention. Again tks to all for the help. Potential new club member with a big "if" still to go. 73's KE7GCJ |

Re: You guys are too much
That would be me. I have a 89 SeaCraft 23WA w/89 200 Merc. Boat has been stored inside except when in the water fishing. The engine still runs very strong and well maintained. Not much to check except for the transon, I don't think you will have the worries that the east coast people have w/rot unless the boat has spent the last 15-16 years sitting outside uncovered. I will run my 200 until it dies as there would be much value in trade when I repower.

Re: You guys are too much
I just bought a package as well, you just have to break down each part of the deal as to what its worth. As said they don't want to add anything for the motor or very little and I would agree, then do the trailer, and your left with putting a value on the hull, with any added repairs.

Re: You guys are too much
Gary,
Thank you for the input. I will look at the boat on Friday. This is the second or third time someone has mentioned the transom. As to the motor, yes we must run until they drop in that the repower cost is significant for a 200 or 225. When a decision or deal is made i will certainly let everyone know. Again thank you. |
Re: You guys are too much
ESD,
I have done some work and have the numbers. Let's hope that the seller agrees with my math or at least part of the calculations. All the best KE7GCJ |
Re: another hull
Dear Gary,
another party has made an offer on the boat. since you are in the area I wanted to let you know I am in terested in a 23 if you see any around this neck of the woods. All the best. Dale@caviar.com 206 323 3325 |
Re: another hull
There has never been that many SeaCrafts in this area. Hawley's Marine had them for 1 year, they only had 4 23's, I bought 1 and was told the others were sent to Alaska. They then went bankrupt. There was a 19-21 CC for sale up here a year or so ago, don't know if it was sold or not. I'll keep you in mind.

Re: another hull
Gary,
Thank you. My goal is to take an open hull up the inside passage to Alaska in 2010. The Seacraft looks like a good hull for that trip. Do you agree? Is there another open hull that could prove to be a logical choice? KE7GCJ Dale |
Re: another hull
That is a pretty gutsy trip even for a SeaCraft 23WA. There are some real nasty streches of water, even for the inside. I've talked with a couple of people who have made the trip in something a 24 Bayliner. I have a friend who has had his 24 Bayliner as far as Desolation Sound, but he was tagging along with a 30ft Whaler and a 38ft Bayliner. Georgia Straits can be nasty because the wind funnels down thru there. I have been as far as Campbell River. Also fished out of Prince Rupert, but drove up there to board a boat. :o

Re: another hull
Trayder (our administrator) has a video that he got from Mr. Potter of two SeaCrafts that make a trip from California to Mexico. I'm sure you would have no problem if you planned your trip well.

Re: another hull
Yeah . . . I want to see that video someday!!

Re: another hull
Gary and Strick,
thank you for the input. I tow an 18 ft Whaler to Campbell River in the summer and have seen the wind kick up is a hurry around Cortes Is. As far as planning I have friends that cruise up and back every year in big boats and they would help with the ports of call and refuges. It's a crazy dream that I have had for 20 years and the best part will be the planning and playing in the boat. Who knows I may end up with photos on the Seacraft Forum. Again thank you. As the ball keep rolling I will certainly let you know. All the best KE7GCJ Dale |
