1970 19' bowrider progress.
Got alot of work done on the girl the last two days. Thgought maybe the pourable transom material would come today. But I guess it will come tomorrow when I have to work and its supposed to rain.
Got the outter skin reglassed in since I changed my mind and im going to go with a bracket from http://dadmarine.com/pictures__info1.htm for $700 http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110093.jpg http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110094.jpg http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110095-big.jpg http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110100-big.jpg Since I wanted to have the area where the bracket is going to be mounted to have extra reenforcement I started glassing in the below deck portion with a waxed form. So far it has two layers of 6oz woven mat, two layers of chop mat and one layer of 24oz woven mat. I am gonna add the same amout before I begin the pour and more after the pour if im not happy with it. http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110101-big.jpg |
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Well I got the mold finished earlier and for somereason my computer will mot recogize my sony camera but here are few cameraphone shots. The first one is what it would look like if you could see it from outside the back of the boat. The second one gives a decent idea on how big the live well is gonna be. The live well will be the size of the inner molds outside surfaces. The third picture is of the composite transom material.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Nice work on the live well. Looks like a custom job that one of the guys from the bertram 31 site sells for those boats. There's some pretty good building tips on that site too. Keep us posted on the transom. I'm interested to see how that stuff works out. -will

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Looking Good gigolot. You're well on your way.
May I make a sugestion that you use some form of laminent to form the mold of the inside of your live well into an oval shape. Live bait DO NOT like square corners ;) |
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Yea I wanted to make it round, but in order to keep in under the gunnel it has to be small and its too small to try to make round.I plan to 5200 some 1/3 pieces of large pvc pipe if it becomes a problem.
new pictures from yesterday and today from the sony camera. Didn't get to take the forms off because I wanted the material to setup good then it got dark. So monday I will take the forms off when I get home from work. http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110295.JPG http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110296.JPG http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110303.JPG http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110299.JPG http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/110300.JPG |
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
with the forms off. I did the transom and live well all at the same time so it can be considered one piece. (Next time)I do this I am not gonna glass the forms before hand because there are a couple air pockets I want to fill. All in all this appears to be a fantastic product that is solid as a rock as you can see with me standing on the livewell while its not glassed in and its only about 1/2" thick except on the front where the form bowed a little.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Did you pour that using the transom repair stuff???
|
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
It was all poured in, four five gallon buckets about 45minutes between buckets like the transomrepair.com site said to wait because of exothermic reactions. Other than that I did the pour a little different. I glassed the forms and tucked the new unrosined glass behind the old glass, I am gonna glass it in again and make a sandwich out of the old glass, after payday. My boat work budget for this month is spent.I would suggest this to anyone doing work on their boat. I have replaced the transom on my other boat before with wood and when I do it again it will be with seacast so it won't ever have to be done again.
|
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
How much will the poured transom weigh??
|
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
I forgot to weigh the buckets, but UPS from florida to va was $21 per bucket. I am gonna guess the new transom is gonna be around 100 lbs.
|
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
on my shipping label for a five gallon bucket good for 1000 square inches the weight was 26 lbs
just saw this on the site: Seacast is 40lb per square foot water is 65lb per square foot http://transomrepair.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=102 |
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Been a few weeks, got paid last week with boat monies to spare after bills, and finally a decent weather day off work for glass work. Got almost all of the interior glass work completed just before dark tuesday night and been at work since. Overtime is paying for this work. Got about an hour or so of glass work to finish inside then I will be sanding the exterior smooth and filling in divits before I paint it sometime next week. I am ordering a 18" bracket from stainless marine because by the time you figure out prices for add-ons its cheaper than the other company I checked earlier. 18" bracket should be good to still be able to tilt the motor and not be to stern heavy, in the future I will be putting a jackplate on it so that will add about 4" more. I will add some pics tomorrow.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
thanx for the update - looking forward to the pix!

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Pay no attention to the sharpie drawings on the transom, I know they are wrong I was just figuring when I made those. The discolored areas around the edges is the original fiberglass under the new fiberglass. I also have a layer under the old glass going about 2" below to tie everything together.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Bait well/storage hatch. Im probably gonna put a piece of clear plexiglass where the vent scoop was over the bait well and rod holders where the two outer vents were. After more scientific mathmatical equasions, it looks like the bolds to hold the bracket on will be in side this area and not below it. So when I order the bracket I will have to see if they can give me carriage bolts instead of hexhead bolts. Thats not snow on the ground, Had to remove the wet balsa wood from the gunnel cap at the transom and grind it out to prepare for new wood, then I figured while I was all glassed up I might as finish leveling the transom. So now hopefully all the major grinding/sanding is done for this step of the project except filling in divits that I ground on the transom where previous holes were.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
What kind of livebait are you planning to keep in ther?
|
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
just some small spot and menhaden, menhaden don't do well in any live well so I know they are not gonna do well. Later down the road when I rework the stringers and raise the floor I am gonna put a larger well in the deck.
|
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Well, that size and shape will be fine for throwing your frozen bait in or keeping some shrimp alive, but I wouldn't look for it to do very good with anything else.
|
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Menhaden need round or oval, no square corners. They won't live long at all. I spoke with Don Herman about this as my bait well also has square corners. He suggested splitting large (3" or 4") sch. 10 pvc pipe in quarters and glassing them in the corners.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Decided the other day that I didn't like the shape of the transom outter skin so I sanded it down to fiberglass and filled in the areas that I didn't like with 20oz matt. Got it pretty close, now im gonna put a thin layer of filler over the whole transom and sand till im happy and hopefully that will be early enough to get the first coat of paint on thurs.
http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113410-big.JPG http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113409.JPG Then just as I was leaving to out for the evening the UPS man walked up my stairs to deliver the new 18" engine bracket from stainless marine. http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113411-big.JPG |
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Busy day on the LITTLE GIGOLOT today keith stopped by and helped me with the measuring and layout of the transom template. Rough sanded all the fresh fiberglass and put a thin layer of filler across the transom then sanded it down and put the first coat of INTERLUX on the transom. I knew before I painted it that the transom wasn't perfect but its hard to see whats wrong with no shine. It turned out better than I thought it would but still have a little bit of filling to get it near perfect. When its all said and done, the sides will be blue, the gunnels, bottom and the transom below the outter chine will be white. Thinking of a stripe where the colors change on the hull. But what color, Maybe black to blend the bracket better?
BRACKET TEMPLATE http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113576.JPG FILLER SANDED DOWN TO NEAR PAPER THIN http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113575-big.JPG FIRST COAT OF PAINT WENT ON TRANSOM TODAY http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113574-big.JPG BRACKET PUT ON FOR COLOR CONTRAST http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113573-big.JPG I THINK THE BLACK BRACKET AND CHARCOAL MOTOR WILL BE A GOOD CONTRAST. WHAT DO YOU THINK? http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/107382.jpg |
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Black always looks good! Nice Work!-Doug

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
got the motor mounted today. Its only got two bolts holding it on till I get to boaters world to get some more stainless nuts but its not getting wet for a few weeks anyway.
Now all I need is the hydralic steering system. Ex-roommate is supposed to buy it for christmas gift but if not I will order it in three weeks. 5200 to seal the bracket to the transom. http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113778.jpg rear view http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113779.jpg side view motor down http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113780-big.jpg motor on trailer stops http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113782-big.jpg motor way up http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/113781-big.jpg |
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
A couple of observation's after the fact.
The bracket should have been mocked up dry and then taped around with a 1/4in space between the bracket and tape on the transom and then the same on the bracket with a 3/16 to 1/4in space from the mounting surface. After the bracket was bolted up, use you finger to make a clean fillet of the 5200. Then the tape is peeled off to have a clean line. The 5200 should have been Black. The 5200 should have been applied all the way around all the bolt hole's too. Just suggestion's for the future. |

its starting to come together. i like when that happens.
|
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
I put 5200 in the holes and a good amount on every bolt and "screwed" them in to get a good coat on the entired surface of the bolt/hole.I pretty much used an entired cault tube putting the baracket on. The bracket is rounded so I can still come back with black around the outside. Have a good amount of caulk that seeped inside the bracket and outside the bracket. I don't really think its possible I will get any water intrusion with the amount of 5200 I used, but if I do its a composite transom that will not be affected by water according to the manufacturer of the composite.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
sounds like a plan.
either way its lookin good man. |
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
OK, gotta question to ask. I am starting the process of removing the three layers of anti-foulant from the hull. What kinda paint would be good to paint the bottom so it doesn't wear to much on a bunk trailer?

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Got a little more work done on the little boat today. I knew there was a little rot under the bow cleat area but it turned out the all the balsa was water logged so out it came. Was going good till I got tired of the belt sander to remove the remants of rotten wood and climbed in under the cap with the angle grinder with a 36 grit paddle sander. When I came out I looked like frosty the snow man and itch from head to toe. But I got all the rot out and the majority of the original glue sanded away.Started to rain a little so I called it a day, hopefully will get it all installed sunday.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
this is the starboard side near the helm. I made releif cuts about 2" X 2" squares so it would form better. Now all I have to do is give the 5200 enough time to cure before I remove the screws holding it all in place.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Got a lot done yesterday. Two more coats of paint on the gunnel cap. sanded the deck and got two coats of paint on it. Got the cut outs done for the vhf, gps, and steering, don't worry they are straight its just that they are only sitting in there a little crooked. Simi mounted the antennas, cleats, and lights.

Nice job, Looks great so far. :D

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Nice work on that boat.I have that same boat with only one diference in that the transome was made for an outboard.Im thinking of modifing it and turning it into a center console. The boat had two evinrude 70hp and was running aprox.35mph but I instaled those engines on a 19foot mako,so righ now I have two yamaha 40hp for it.Im also thinking of adding some spray rails to it because its a VERY WET!! ride.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Gigolot, very nice job you're doing on your 19 Bowrider!
Tito, I'm obviously very partial to Bowriders and they are somewhat of a rarity...would be a shame to cut her up. |
Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Got the teak sanded, oiled a few weeks ago, and made a new hatch/cutting board for the bait box out of starboard. Installed the new icom 504 vhf on friday and today I retrofitted a new seat to the old base.
hatch http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/127747.JPG cuttingboard http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/127748.JPG new seat and VHF http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/127676-big.JPG this is the seat for when the ladies want to "get a tan" http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/127678.JPG About all that is left is to paint the fuel tank hatch, make a new hatch for where the I/O was and get a new below deck fuel tank maufactured and remove the bottom paint. Plus im sure there will be plenty of little things I notice along the way. |
