opinions...2001 evinrude 150
Hey guys,
I just went and looked at a 2001 evinrude 150. The asking price is $4500. It is being sold from the dealer that origionally sold it. It has 350 hours, and the highest rpm's it has seen is 5120. The computers did not report anythign wrong with it, or any problems in the past. I was able to get the price down to $4100 and i put a small deposit on it. It also will come with a 30 day warranty. I'm not concerned with any powerhaed issues that the earlier fichts are known for. My dad has 2 2000 150's, so i know that these engines are good if you have a good one. My main question is, Is there anything else I should be concerned about? I believe that the price is good based upon other engines i've seen for sale, and I also checked nada guides. The engine will go on the back of my 20'. Does anybody have a similar set up? I'm thinkin she'll cruise at 32mph and top out at 45. Any feedback would be great. -Andrew |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
I had a 1999 150 ficht. Top speed was a hair over 40mph on my 20 MA. My advice is to beat the living piss out of that motor during the first 30 days and get the bugs worked out. That motor needs to be propped to hit 6000rpm . . . 5100 is very very low. Blown the carbon out . . . it probably needs it. http://www.boatsetup.com/Decarb_FICHT.html

Also I think from some good sources on FS you should run the DFI oil from Rude the XD50. Part of the problems on early DI motors was the oil was not as advanced as the motors.

There is no doubt that i'll run it at wot for a lil while to get that carbon out...hopefully the previous owner used carbon guard. Eggsuckindog, I wouldn't use any other oil except the oil from rude....its not worth using a cheaper oil that is not as good for your engine. Then your just asking for problems. Any other feedback would be great...thanks -Andrew |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
You should do a good decarb on it, since you are from here I will give a number for my best friend and one of the worlds top Rude experts. I just hate to bother him too much but he will answer any question you have on it and will be at our bash and his partner Mario will too with his redone 23- Mike at American Marine 727 938 9796 - tell him I told you call-since he is one of the worlds top Rude experts- a little massage never hurts :D
www.usavemarine.com is his site also just FYI |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
There are a variety of decarbonizing chemicals out there, most of them pretty good, although I'm slightly partial to Quicksilver/Mercury PowerTune
One trick I learned was to spray the stuff into the intake while running WOT in gear. Nothing works better except an engine tear-down. |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
I just bought a bunch of the Yamaha product "combustion engine cleaner" and tried it on the pistons (with the heads off) of a motor that I was tearing down. I tried both side by side and Yamaha Combustion Engine cleaner doesn't hold a candle to powertune. Powertune works much much faster.

Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
Thanks for the replies...i did not think this many people would be familiar with decarbing. I'm not gonna lie guys...i'm not gonna be in any mood to tear the engine apart after all the work i'm doin on the boat. I will consider it next winter though.
I will deffinately decarb it with the instructions via the link previously posted by bigshrimpin. Thanks for the input. -Andrew |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
Just follow the instructions no tear down, the reason I mentioned the X50 is I believe its Direct Injection motor which require different oil than carbs or EFI's.

Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
i have twin 150 200 fichts that are good to me. That being said if I could get 4k each for mine with controls, tanks, props id sell them tommorrow.
You wanted advice right? My advice is that you could find that motor cheaper due to the (mostly false) bad reputation they have. I always notice fichts for sale and they are usually a tough sell. |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
You might see them for cheaper, but do u see them being sold by a dealer with only 350 hrs that has done all the maintenance on it?
For the past year, i've been looking at the prices that outboards sell for, and some prices are just rediculous on outboards that have over 700hrs on them. It also greatly depends on were you live. Prices in the north east are deffinately more expensive than those in the south. I don't think i got the deal of my life on this motor, but i also don't think i got ripped off. btw...the nada value is 5500 or so i believe. Once again, thanks for the responces on the decarbing methods. -Andrew |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
You do have a point w/ the dealer. I anticipate a problem getting good $ for my Fichts when I sell so I thought Id have credibility offering advice.
The ones still running are good motors and said to be better than etecs fuel burn wise |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
NADA values are way way off. Their values are based on straight depreciation of the original value (and factor nothing else).
Look up a 1975 23 seacraft for example . . . $1,680 average retail price. Is that even close to the average retail for these boats??? That being said . . . I did sell my 1999 150 ficht . . . for $2500 (controls, rigging, 2 props, engine stand). It had a little over 150hrs. 2001 motor is much much better. |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
I guess i just didn't mind paying a little extra for the "dealer" part of it. I know that the dealer i bought it from is a very reputable dealer and have a great reputation. I also know that if you have one that runs, its a great engine.
As i said before, we have 2 2000 150's in the family, and they haven't given us a single problem. I also have been looking for quite some time now, and i haven't seen that many fichts for sale in my area, or any other newer outboards...especially within 30mins driving distance, which this one is. NADA values are deffinately way off on very old boats and outboards that have been rebuilt, or other work put into them, but i'd think that the newer outboards and boats are pretty easy to give a value to b/c most haven't had more money poured into them...get what i'm sayin? Is it true about the fuel burn compared to the etecs? I'd figure that the etec had better burn numbers. |
Re: opinions...2001 evinrude 150
As long you feel you got a good deal its a good deal.
By the way its your money and sometimes looking for a better deal may cost you more money.. Old saying YOU SNOOSE YOU LOSE ..Shipping for some reason turn into a way to make extra money. |
