Re: Bug Time
Ha Chuck;
I was down at Long Key first week in June for a few days and was talking to a guy that dives Long Key every year for the last 20 years. He said that this year he was not going to go. That day he looked at approx 20 spots he always dives on each year and saw No Bugs in any of them. Instead of Bugs there was one 20-60 Lb. Jew fish sitting there instead. Looks like the original Bug poachers have taking over their turf and are not going to leave much for the divers or commercial guys to get. You better bring some fishing rods with Ya. I think I will be going this year but out of Miami. Maybe on the ocean side you will find them good luck. http://www.goatview.com/lobster2.jpg FellowShip __________________________________________________ ________ Just for the Grins :D :D |
Re: Bug Time
Hey Ken, be glad you got that shot in front of Treasure Village with Jumbo Bug!! Word has it that some Millionaire
bought it and relocated it to his house. :( That is where we stay behind the (used to be) Bug at the Ragged Edge. Ken |
Re: Bug Time
well, with the mini-season being mid-week, it won't be the slightest bit crowded right?

Re: Bug Time
Believe it or not Ikan, the crowds have gotten smaller
in the keys for the 2 day because Monroe County has basically banned all of the inshore hunting for bugs. Canals, any manmade objects, and all the protected natural reefs. You have to hit the places that have generally been the best first and early. Plus the diving part we Bully net at night which we have found to be more productive. For me it is the thrill of the hunt and the "hangin out" with my buds for the week... See ya, Ken |
Re: Bug Time
The resort has already started to fill with bug killers,it is by far my least favorite week here.Nothing against doing your thing, but the bunch we get, lets just say my boat won't leave the slip this week.

Re: Bug Time
I hear ya Joey, It's to bad the whole economy in the keys is based on tourism, The way Monroe Co. is going you probably won't have to worry about any body coming before long. When you see long time business's like the Green Turtle & Manny & Isa's shutting down that ought to be the wake up call. There pricing themselves into a millionaires
get away, but if the regular guy cannot afford to live there, then what? I have been coming down for 35 years straight. Seen the good and the bad. There are those that come and rape and pillage the resource, which makes all of good people that come look bad. One of the reasons we stay in the middle keys is the trouble makers seem to go farther down. We can catch bigger bugs up here in Daytona, but it is truly the atmosphere that keeps my friends and I coming back year after year. See ya, Ken PS: If you are gonna be dry docked feel free to come on up and we can toss down a few brews and BS. |
Re: Bug Time
I know of several small boat wrecks between Bahia Honda and Sombrero that have produced for me year after year, and they're all in less than 12' of water.
And if you dive with mixed gases, both the freighter wrecks outside the middle reef in the 140 - 160' depth range off of Long Key have produced some monster lobster of 6-10 lb over the years. |

Re: Bug Time
Hittin' the road at 5:00 AM Sunday, Rigged and ready!!!
No mixed gases for me Fr. Frank, been using a Hooka for the last 14 years. 120 ft. max on that bad boy with 1 diver. 2 to 90 ft. Usual depth 18-60 ft. is generally what we work. Hope to see some of our fellow CSC'ers. I stick out like a sore thumb with the "FLY" color and the tower, not to many 20's with that set-up. See ya next week, enjoy the peace and quiet while I'm gone. I know you will miss me :D----yeah right!! Oh yeah, if ole Spider would care to join us, just hollar' Ken |
Re: Bug Time
I spoke with No Bones, he said the giant lobster scuplture is there, but will be removed soon, and that he scouted some spots and found them occupied ;)

with the biggest Motorguide trolling motor. We bullied 15 starting at 12:00am, had them cleaned and in the freezer by 4:30am. Jumped into bed for a quick 3 hour nap, then loaded up the 20SF to do the dive thing by 8:00am. The bugs were real scarce that day (Wed). Tried to bully that night only 1 due to the wind and chop. Thursday was looking bleak until we found a little coral patch that held 38 bugs. Needless to say we had to work our butts off to make our limit for the 2 day. All in all it was a good trip with crowdsdown to nothing in the keys. Law enforcement was a-plenty, Airplanes, helicopters, and unmarked boats!!! It was a good trip, also got to spend sometime with other CSC members while we were down. Now it is back to the salt-mines tomorrow. See ya, Ken |
Re: Bug Time

Ken, Glad too hear you all had a good time.Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet up with you but I had my hands full with surveyors and yacht brokers trying to get my Carolina boat sold.It was a very calm, easy mini season this year, very nice!

Re: Bug Time
Capt. Chuck-
Spider Crab says that they taste just like chicken! Rat on an onion roll with extra BBQ sause sounds great. Nice pic! You are the king of photos! I have a bunch of oak logs drying out for the fire in November-I had to help the dredge guy out who was working in my canal. |
Re: Bug Time
Hey Nov. Where at???If its down here in the south land I'm in!
