Ha Chuck;

I was down at Long Key first week in June for a few days and was talking to a guy that dives Long Key every year for the last 20 years. He said that this year he was not going to go. That day he looked at approx 20 spots he always dives on each year and saw No Bugs in any of them. Instead of Bugs there was one 20-60 Lb. Jew fish sitting there instead. Looks like the original Bug poachers have taking over their turf and are not going to leave much for the divers or commercial guys to get. You better bring some fishing rods with Ya. I think I will be going this year but out of Miami. Maybe on the ocean side you will find them good luck.

Hey Ken, be glad you got that shot in front of Treasure Village with Jumbo Bug!! Word has it that some Millionaire
bought it and relocated it to his house.
That is where we stay behind the (used to be) Bug at the Ragged Edge.

well, with the mini-season being mid-week, it won't be the slightest bit crowded right?

Believe it or not Ikan, the crowds have gotten smaller
in the keys for the 2 day because Monroe County has basically banned all of the inshore hunting for bugs.
Canals, any manmade objects, and all the protected natural reefs. You have to hit the places that have generally been the best first and early. Plus the diving part we Bully net at night which we have found to be more productive. For me it is the thrill of the hunt and the "hangin out" with my buds for the week...

I hear ya Joey, It's to bad the whole economy in the keys is based on tourism, The way Monroe Co. is going you probably won't have to worry about any body coming before long. When you see long time business's like the Green Turtle & Manny & Isa's shutting down that ought to be the wake up call. There pricing themselves into a millionaires
get away, but if the regular guy cannot afford to live there, then what? I have been coming down for 35 years straight. Seen the good and the bad. There are those that come and rape and pillage the resource, which makes all of good people that come look bad. One of the reasons we stay in the middle keys is the trouble makers seem to go farther down. We can catch bigger bugs up here in Daytona, but it is truly the atmosphere that keeps my friends and I coming back year after year.
See ya, Ken
PS: If you are gonna be dry docked feel free to come on up
and we can toss down a few brews and BS.

I know of several small boat wrecks between Bahia Honda and Sombrero that have produced for me year after year, and they're all in less than 12' of water.

And if you dive with mixed gases, both the freighter wrecks outside the middle reef in the 140 - 160' depth range off of Long Key have produced some monster lobster of 6-10 lb over the years.
