Trailers for SC 23'

What type of trailer is generally the best, for both long haul and around town?

I would say aluminum "float on" type rated at a minimum of 6000#, dual axle and disc brakes on all four wheels. This is one of those "don't cheap out" things when you buy.

Yepper!!! Looks just like mine, just a different brand. And it looks like you also have the deluxe model where the I-beams are "wrapped around" and bolted through the 3" x 3" square tube that holds the winch stand and hitch...much stronger design.

Or.... You could go w/ a cheapy trailer vvvvvv

But, NOT RECOMMENDED!! That was the trailer my boat came on, sold it for $ 300 and was glad to get it!

Torsion axles are a must.

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

Take in to consideration the ramps you plan to use. My boat came on a bunk trailer but I had to time my use with the tides. When I got a new one, I went with rollers. I too agree on torsion axles. The difference is unveleivable as compared to leaf springs.

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

Never had a trailer w/torsion axles - what exactly do you feel in the difference?

jongolds 12-10-2009 07:35 PM

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

I can't speak for everyone but in my experience it was like going from riding in my old Jeep Cherokee (which had rear leaf springs) to any car with a modern independent suspension - just much more comfortable, less bounce, less sway. I'm sure someone can give a better explanation than I but I think it's similar to the difference between a solid axle vs. independent suspension in a car, meaning a wheel can go up and down on it's own with out affecting what the wheel on the opposite side is doing where as with a solid axle & leaf springs if one wheel goes up, the opposite wheel wants to go down and then the rocking ensues from there (only without the benefit of shock absorbers in teh case of a trailer.

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

i love roller trailers for new england ramps you can launch and retrieve in just enough water to float the boat bunks do support better unless you get enough rollers and it can be tough to get off the trailer in shallow water with bunks

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

just out of curiosity, if no one minds of course, what did some of you pay for your new trailers for your 23's?
im wondering because i found a 23 but i cant tell how the trailer is from the pictures. i wanted to try to use it as a bargaining tool. thanks in advance.

Six years ago I bought a bunk style venture trailer for a little more than $3k. 4 years ago I bought a roller style for a little more money (but it is a better trailer)

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

thanks for the replies with the price. i ended up not getting the boat. he wants 4k for it and its about 10 hours from me. i couldnt commit to buying it without seeing it. i would hate to take a 10 hour drive to decide i didnt want it. he wouldnt budge on the price either. so the search continues. unless a hull and aluminum trailer are worth 4k? boat does need work and i have no idea about the shape of the trailer.

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

what size couplers are you guys with the big boat running? 2" or 2 5/16" ??
how many have surge disc brakes or do you have electric over hydraulic??

Old'sCool 01-16-2010 05:20 PM

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

2", surge

DonV 01-16-2010 06:35 PM

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

Ditto on the 2" hitch ball and surge brakes.....SS disc brakes on all four wheels.

Hey Mr. Reelescape, received my boat cover Friday, spent a couple of hours doing the initial adjustments, seems like a pretty good value to me. Thanks again for the info. Seeya

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

my new to me trailer has 2 5/16 with surge drums that dont work. is there any drawback to using that size ball? also do kodiaks have a surge application??

htillman 01-16-2010 11:39 PM

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

I run Kodiak disk brakes with a 2 5/16" ball on one trailer and a 2" ball on a trailer with drum brakes. The disks brakes are better, the larger ball and disks seems to work better with that application - heavy duty galvanized trailer.

If I recall correctly, we had a good thread going on this topic a few years back. I have a Rolls Axle Trailer, with a 6K capacity. I remember Capt Chuck saying that 7K should be the choice. So go 7K if there is a choice

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

really? i searched for 23 trailer set up 2 years back but i only got this one. does any one know where it might be??
my trailer is supposedly rated 6500 pounds. a new one is not in my budget right now so ill have to fix this one up. like i said its galvanized I beam with no rust on the major structure of it. it needs at least 1 axle and maybe springs. it needs tires for sure and im going to do the bearings anyway. im trying to learn all i can about brakes and such.

et23, do you have the kodiaks using a surge brake actuator coupler? how does it feel when your towing it? since mine right now is just sliding freely, it slams really hard when i stop or move forward.

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

I like the actuator and setup with Kodiak brakes. It sounds like your actuator is ok and is trying to work. Install brakes and hook everything up, you may have to rebuild the actuator (I did). A good place to get parts is Steelco (Sportsmans) trailer. I do not know about there pricing as I took my trailer down there and had everything matched up. If you have a good trailer place near you that may be a good place to visit.

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

When you get to the point of hooking up the brakes, be sure to use DOT 5 Silicone Brake Fluid! It's more expensive than the regular DOT 3 stuff, but it won't absorb moisture
like DOT 3 does, which is a big deal in South Florida! With DOT 5, you'll never have to do anything more to the hydraulic part of the system; with DOT 3, it should be flushed annually to prevent corrosion in the system.

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

im going to put a new actuator on it when i re-do the brakes. its above the tongue. im going to get one thats in line with the tongue. the way it is now there is too much load on the front axle. i have my tow and stow hitch all the way up but its still too low.

Re: Trailers for SC 23'

you guys have been so helpful with all my trailer questions. please bare with me as i have a few more. these are regarding bunks. one trailer shop here quoted me $80 each for new bunks 3"x6"x10' that are carpeted already. i was thinkin for alot less i can just go to homedepot or a lumber yard and get sone boards in the dimensions that i need and carpet them myself. is a 4x6 enough to support the portion of the 23 that sticks out past the trailer frame? or could i even step up to 2 2x8's bolted together for each side?? my bunk mounts are welded on and a 3.5" board fits in there. now for the front, i was thinking of using the forward v-bunks and maybe one of those v-shpaed pvc guides? i need to get the boat back over here so i can take some pictures of the trailer.

thats some better pics of my POS trailer. ive come to the conclusion with the help of you guys (thanks) that this trailer is not a good fit for this boat. my new plan is to just get some rear bunks under the boat and when the time comes to actually use the boat ill get another trailer. i dont need to speed the money for it to just sit in my yard for 2 years. i did find some good deals on used trailers.
