Long Island? Any recommendations?
Looks like I will be working in Long Island, Ny for a little while. Any recommendations for tackle shops, boat yard, boat porn, etc in the area? Will be looking for something to do. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
Not to be a wise guy - or maybe to be one....
Long Island is kind of ...well...long, and it is an island so water is... Anyway, can you narrow down the area you are looking at? |
Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
Montauk, Massapequa, Hampton Bays, Valley Stream, Orient Point ?
Depends on which end you are at... Have family out in the Hamptons. Real nice and pricey the further out the Island you go. How long have you been sentenced to this extreme? Just kiddin' :D See ya, Ken |
Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
I have never been to long island. I will be working all over the place, I think. I am staying in NJ and don't know how long I will working long island. I will be looking for something to do and kill time. Sorry I am not much help in nailing down an area, but I just don't know yet.

Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
I am a born and raised Long Islander. I have been transplanted to Vermont and spend my winters in Ft. Lauderdale. L.I is 120 miles long and about 15 miles wide at its widest point. If you are on the western part you will be close to Queens, Brooklyn and Manahtten (alot of people). As you travel East through Nassau County it is a little less populated. When you enter Suffolk County it will change from urban to country. The fishing is great throughout, especially Stripers and blues. If you go all the way to Montauk Pt you will be in fishing heaven. As a kid I dug steamer clams, crabbed, and lots of little necks and mussels. The Tuna fishing is great off shore. Let me know where you will be or what your options are and I'm sure I can advise you. If you can trailer your boat you will enjoy some great fishing anf fun. It is not all city!!!

Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
Let me know when you're in town. Depending on the season I may be able to put you into some good fishing.

Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
Hummmm......you do know it's colder than a "a well digger's ass" this time of year?? I have family in East Hampton and the high for today was a smooth 19 degrees. Oh yeah, it could be worse, go to "The Hamptons" in the summer and a beer is around $5 to $7 at most any bar you go to. Enjoy and have fun!

Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
Thanks guys,
Well I drove from Buffalo to Woodbridge, NJ today and should start working over the weekend. Looks like I will be mostly on the western end. I am going to try to make the treck to Mantauk. Seems like one of those places I need to see. Not sure if there will be much to see this time of year, but I can say I have been there and get the T-shirt. BA |
Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
If you're into getting out and getting fresh air, there are great walks/hikes all around montauk. point this time of year and nobody around. I do a lot of surfcasting out there in other seasons and the beaches are amazing. Most stores in town will be closed, but the lighthouse will be open-just check your hours before you go. The view from the top is pretty cool and the museum about the history of the lighthouse is very interesting, as far as that stuff goes.
There's a small seal colony that usually moves in this time of year on the north side beaches and they have walks to see them. (I know some of you cape cod guys wish they were hunting parties) If you get off the beaten path out there you'll see some special scenery and between the town/state they have done a great job of preserving a lot of it. |
Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
Welcome to Long Island.
No need to go to Montauk. Plenty of great fishing closer to your base of operations. Think Sandy Hook, Jamaica bay, Sandy hook bay, etc. A good fishing web site is "NOREAST.COM" Season is short but can very rewarding. Look up Billy the kid on this site. He fish's mid to north Jersey Hard. Welcome to a underestimated fishing area. |
Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
I fished with PeterB and his buddy Dan yesterday out of Montauk and the Cod fishing is superb! Everyone on the boat limited out by 10:30 and we went in early. Montauk has more fishing opportunites than anywhere I've been. Just drive around and look at what's in the boatyards and you'll get the picture. Montauk is a fishermans paradise.

Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
Yeah, welcome to LI. The coastline of LI is awesome, w/ great Bays and coves everywhere.
The northshore of the Island is very hilly and rocky w/ some of the nicest natural harbors you'll ever see. The Sound, separating LI from Connecticut is fairly deep and is home to some great fishing ( I'm a Southshore person, so I don't know it as well ) The southshore is very flat and very beachy, with barrier beaches along most of the Southshore that protects the mainland - in between these barrier islands, most of which are less than 1000' wide, and the mainland are different bays ( the inlets that connect these bays and The Ocean are where some great fishing is done. The West of LI is very congested with people but the fishing is still excellent. As you move East, there is more wiggle room and I feel it gets more and more beautiful. There are great tackleshops and fishing areas throughout the island; - Long Beach - party boat fleet - Freeport - big fishing center - Babylon - Augies bait and tackle - Captree (fishes Fire Island Inlet area) - BIG party boat fleet - Bayshore - tackle shops & big Bay to fish out of - Huntington - very salty town - Northport - Terminal Tackle - good place (sell in bulk) - Hamptons - there are two very good inlets - Shinnecock and Moriches - Orient Point - some of the best fishing in LI - Montauk Point - " " " " " " " The Saltiest place on LI I'm sure there are other places, this a broad stroke. Some helpful hints - plan your days traveling on LI with rush hours - they are terrible. There are too many people here - and not enough road. This place was a better place to live 25 years ago - Urban Crawl has ruined the 'way it was' to the 'way it is'... ' se la vie '... That's why the water is the place to be - get away from it all. As mentioned by someone else, you can find some beautiful nature all around. Nice people too, along with A-holes - just like anywhere... Good luck ! |
Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
I think the Long Island boys need to do some kind of gathering in the spring-maybe a fluke derby(if we have a season!) or something like that. What say ye?

Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
We fished on the Susie E.
http://susiee.com/index.htm PeterB has great info on bottom fishing and he was right. Great Captain and mate and all the people except me were very serious experienced cod fisherman. |
Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
I'd be into that come the warm weather. I was born and raised in Freeport. I now live in vermont in the summer and Ft. Lauderdale in the winter. My 20" Seacraft is a snow bird just like I am. I bring it to L.I. a few times a year. The bass fishing is awesome out of Jones Inlet or Rockaway, or Fire Island Inlet. Oh hell it's great all along the island!

Re: Long Island? Any recommendations?
If you are there come the late spring you have to try the striper fishing around Jersey and L.I. It's great.
