Which transducer?

Getting ready to install a raymarine e7d and need to order a transducer. I am going to go through hull but I didn't know which was the correct angle to order?

I have a PiranhaMax 160 fishfinder with a shoot thru ducer. My first ducer was triangular and it did not read. I just bought a puck and it reads very well. Supposedly, shoot thru ducers work best on single layer hulls. Good luck!:)

I went with a 20deg b60 ducer, mounted on the lowest part of the hull. Its a universal one that fits more than one machine, with a difrent pigtail. Call BOE marine and ask them if it will fit yours.

Patrick is correct! I've got the B164 20 degree mounted like he did and it works perfect.

Are these actually thru hull or shoot through hull?
I was thinking of the one. That actually gets drilled through the hull. I also looked at ones that mount in the hull but are not drilled through. Is there a difference? Which is better?
Thank you

Same here. It's true thru-hull mount.

forget shoot thru - its like mowing half the grass

How true ESD.....like being just a little bit pregnant. :)

Thanks guys
So 20degree is the correct angle for a 23 center console?
If any one has pictures of where there's is mounted could you post them?

I installed a shoot thru on a 34 silverton once it work fine in my case thought it ws t the fastest boat a d i did t want to have to pay for hauling the boat out to do it or the pia.

Mine is Airmar tilted element. I think it's 20*

The 20 degree's is the angle of the cone pointing toward's the sea bottom. The 20 degree transducer is a narrow angle beam or narrow cone. You would use a wider beam in shallower waters. The narrower the beam or cone the more concentrated the signal so therefore the deeper it will see. The question should be what are you using it for? I had a dual switch on my lowrance with a wide angle transducer and a narrow angle 20 degree thru hull transducer. I mainly used the stock wide angle dual frequancy transducer that came with the unit it fished great up to about 300'.

Thank you
I did recieve the tilted 20* airmar.
So now where to drill the hole!!

Reelescape thanks for the pictures. Do you have any that would show the location?
I am trying to figure out as far as which step and how far aft. I am replacing the current bracket with a hermco larger twin bracket so I am not sure it would matter much with the engine mounted farther aft.

DonV 07-23-2012 08:50 AM

You are correct, the transducer will not affect the engine. It's only a 1/4" deep. Mine is centered on the first step from the keel, starboard side, just about 8" in front of the bait well. In your case I'm assuming the bait well is not going to be there. Install close to the transom where it will be out of the way in the bilge, you know, like if you need to step down into the bilge you do not want to step on the transducer or cables. Take your time when installing, it's a one time, get it perfect deal. Good luck!

Thank you
So it is getting close to big hole drilling time. Any last minute tips or advice?

On another transducer question. There is an exsisting through hull ducer mounted directly in th center of the keel. Looks like an oval size not any wider then the keel and about 6 inches long. It is mounted what looks like under the leaning post aft of the console. The current configuration of my boat is the fuel tank is from the rear of the console all the way forward to flush with the step up on the bow. Then there is a large fish box flush in the floor between the strings. It sits just aft of the console ending aft of the leaning post. I assume this is the compartment normally in front of the console in the floor? I am not to sure how you would access the old transducer for in the hull? I never noticed it before due to it location being so far forward and it being painted over with bottom paint. I have thought about calling airman and seeing if they make a transducer that would fit and replace that one in the center of the keel with the new transducers for the chirp fish finders then install the 21* for the regular fish finder? Or would it just be best to remove the old one? If so what would the best way to go about filling such a large hole in the keel?
Sorry for rambling on as always thinks of all the great advise!!
