23 seacraft. F300, F250, F200?
Hey guys looking for some info on the 23 seacraft master angler. Looking to buy a hull and reporter it. Wonder what people are getting for performance numbers with a F300-250-200. ( new inline4 200). Wonder what type of fuel mileage people are getting. Done some searching and seems like the f300 is right around 2.5-3mpg at 35. Can't find much info on the 250 or 200

I have a 2003 21' that I repowered with the new F200 4 cylinder last spring. I doubt it is enough for a 23', although it is surprisingly strong in the mid range and is slightly stronger than the the 200 Merc EFI it replaced. I get about 42-43 mph top end and my best cruise is around 25 mph @ 3.8 mpg. Overall in a day of running 20-30 miles offshore slow trolling for 4-6 hours I almost always end up averaging about 3.0 mpg. I feel is is very adequate for my 21' but would be very marginal for a 23'. Hope this helps.

23 repower
I have been a die hard yamaha guy for years. Had twin 150's on a '88 26' mako and it was awesome. I just got a '79 23' and have been deciding what to put on her. My father is a yamaha certified mechanic and he even doesnt like the new plasma coated cylinders. Ive heard there are other problems as well, but to keep it short and sweet, u definately want a 225 or 250 evinrude etec with a 25" shaft. I am going to put mine on a armstrong or hermco bracket after fully enclosing the transom. This is just my opinion but have done alot of research and talked with people from both yamaha and evinrude and feel this is the way to go.

If you go with an E-TEC, check out this web site: http://www.etecownersgroup.com/. It's the CSC of the outboard world! Several very knowledgeable techs on there who can answer any question you may have in addition to those you haven't even thought of yet! Check out this post by a member who switched from F225's to 200 HO's: http://www.etecownersgroup.com/post/...9&postcount=13

Had F225 and now have a F250 (2006) and its night and day, F250 gets me a cruise of 30 mph at 4000 and well over 3 miles per gallon. turning a 19 pitch 4 blade merc prop.

i goot an f250 ford iputz an beg engen. alls 4 wheal goes in wtater w seacraft. sunk 2..if yoou want 2 by forsall cheep inal

holly crap... spidycrab !!! hVENT seen him post in WHILE ... compare the weight to power and what speeds you will use the most... I am torn between the yami and the etec...
|
I love the f150 but i would stay away from the bigger 4strokes... And my dad isayamaha certified mechanic!! Definately etec...250 best engine on the market... I think u would be even better off with an optimax... Just my opinion.

yamaha's 3.3l four strokes are well proven esp the f250, will far outlast an etec....the new 4.2l are a great engine to havnt seen any problems with them either, tons of power and mid range, as far as the 300-250 in the 4.2 crusing fuel economy will b near identical the only difference between the 300 and 250 is a few ecm calibrations and how far the throttle plate opens. for the power id go with the 300 you wouldnt be disapointed!

I would redo the transom to make it 30". I have a '99 w an F250. A friend repowered w an etec250 and gets much better performance out of it. I would suggest an etec 250. This guy rebuilds seacrafts and says that the 250 in etec is plenty of power. I would say the F250 is reliable and adequate, but I feel I could use more power.

I'm Restoring a 1974 Potter 23SF all composit and raised the transom to 30" and installing a 2012 yamaha F300 with a new 120 gallon fuel tank. I was looking at a Mercury 300 Verado but this was too great of a deal to pass up.

new F 300 would be ideal, reliability, and plenty of dealers around to buy, and service them..The etec's are coming on stronger lately, the new G-2..just need to prove the reliability of them...to me at least.... I like the older 2 stroke ox 66 yami's.plenty of pep, and proven engines.I searched hard to find a good ,used 30" 250 ox66,for my 23,Yes, more gas and oil... the new f300 was way outa my price range, 3.3 - F250's are good motors , but not massive pep for my likes.older F225 are dogs, and have their own problems.make sure it has variable cam shaft timing.NO poptimax! If you gotta go black ,go 300 verado.

Regardless of what brand you go with, 250 ponies is all you would ever want for a 23 cc unless you are hauling bricks to the Bahamas. Anything bigger is just spending cash you won't use except in the channel.
I too am a little wary of Yamaha and their Nazi like maintanence mandates to keep their warranties in force. If it was my money and I wanted to go 4 stroke it would be the new gen Suzuki or take the 2 stroke route with the Etec 250. You would be trilled with either choice. |
