19 sternrider
Came across this beaut last weekend. Its a 67, number 356. Pics dont do justice to how bad of shape the liner and cap and everything is in, if she was in better shape in that regard i wouldnt be gutting her...... But were going down to hullskin and stringers.
Plan is raise stringers quite a bit, shove fuel forward, big in deck livewell behind fuel, decent sized front and rear decks connected with walkaround gunnels, full rear bulkhead and partial front, and a small side console with a grabrail and some instruments. Power will be an inline 3 G2... with a tiller (hence sternrider) If anyone wants anything off her besides the teak anchor locker door lemme know! Merc is a 2.5 200, feels good on a hand spin. Leg spins nicely. Oh man, please photo-document this build in your usual excruciating detail.
I love following along to your work. http://www.classicseacraft.com/commu...ons/icon14.gif (mostly because I'm jealous of your mad skillz...) |
Her older sister is for sale in SoCal.

Nice find dirt, I too am looking forward with excitement on this new project of yours. I think those Moesly bowriders are worthy of more respect with the 4 stringer set up and the holy grail VDR.
I went to look at 'her sister' in West Hills and left her there. I was not familiar with the bowrider and did a few hours of research before making the 5 hour trip. I was thinking it would be a great bay boat and near shore fisherman. Or raise the floor etc. Unfortunately, or not, the trailer was not road worthy and the hull bottom would likely need a flip over to make it right. The eye for the winch is also loose. It is sitting on the trailer wrong too likely because it was pushed up to drain. It was too much for me and left a little sad and hopeful that someone will restore it. |
Will do Zach!
I saw that one in cali on a web search... !PAGING STRICK! Mines definitely gonna have to be flipped, port side has some pretty good step damage and a weird hook going on. Shes coming apart easy though. Any spot with a core is non existent, liners cracked all over, rivets barely hanging on etc. Totally agree on the 4 stringer boats. They just seem better built. Lots of stuff tabbed together on this one. I think theyre better for rebuilding as far as layout and rigging go too. This 19 has a bit more width between the 2 inside stringers than the 20 also so that gives a lil more freedom with premade tank selection. |
Well with the combo of the stringers going in on a monday or friday, and some shoddy repair work, the whole grid is coming out.
At some point someone had her apart and tried to fix some things, during which they used a jigsaw and sliced the stringers in a bunch of spots. They managed to slop a bunch of heavy roving in along with screwing and bedding the deck back down with some caulk on top of the original "moesly putty". Owner said he "hit a submerged object"... The original tabbing is broken and loose in lots of spots, and most wasnt wet out very well. Termites made the rest of demo ezpz. The best wood i found was right near the drain plug, saltwater preservation maybe ?? Mucho tierra to play with! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1b0fe284_z.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...18e78983_z.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...118a109b_z.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9bc8740f_z.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...61119533_z.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr Damage.... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f8f14175_z.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr "Repair" from the inside... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6bbeb82f_z.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr You can see a couple jigsaw cuts here, others are almost full depth. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...89c996c8_z.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d2770e7d_z.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr Gotta love fixing other peoples shit! Stringer height will be about doubled anyway, not a biggie to do all new. Wasnt expecting it to look much better under there... |
Holy butcher of Paul Bocuse. Lotta white glass there.
My 20 was made in November. |

Dirt, I think the chines on the 19s are a little softer on the edges than the 20s. You might think about spray rails, especially with a side console. Speaking from experience

Great lines on this hull

Got the transom in before the rest of demo. Really tried to save outer skin but it was pretty shot. Owner wasnt kidding when he said he hit something!
Plan is to screw some mdf panels underneath the 2 inside panels to pull everything back true and fair, and give a form for the glass to get the step back how its supposed to be. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e43814dd_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...aa1c31fd_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2a716b9b_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr Gonna get that section done before moving on to more repair in the bow... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...86fd6b30_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr |
Wow. That one is going to need some TLC. There is no doubt you will have her ship shape in no time though.
|
TLC is right... Knew i overpaid!
The mdf worked out great and pulled it all back into shape. Used some spray foam to fill some gaps on the inside then shaped it. Left the step a tad tall and proud on the inside of the hull so the glass going on the outside will have a lil more depth to get a buildup on. 2 layers of 1603 over everything then a couple more overlapping the steps. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e2f5117d_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...486e4ba7_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fb376202_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...dbc5976e_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr Time for hole 2 now. Looks like your well on your way,
The older Moesly hulls have a certain cool factor about them. She will be nice once complete. History preserved |
Musta chiseled and grinded 50# of putty and crappy glass outta this thing. All downhill from here :)
Couple layers of biax throughout, extra on the steps. Keel got quite a bit of some heavier stuff. Chines will get some after i pull temporary screws for spray rail out... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...883da4b2_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr My new laser toy made quick work of stringer height https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7c336641_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr 2" h45 core https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c4401cd2_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr 3x1700 and an 1808 cap https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...619f8e5e_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr 2 mains will go in first then the outers... |
Now that laser gizmo is an unfair advantage against us rednecks!! :)
|
This is awesome as it is the same as mine. I will never keep up with you but at least I can watch what you do and try to mimic. I noticed in one picture yours had the same “mound” over the keel that mine has. It appears as though you ground yours out, was that wood under there? Maybe I am not making sense but I will take a picture of mine to make sense but just curious if it’s purpose other than probably just strength.
|
Ill tell ya this Don, its still not as fun as a water level!
Savage, yea there was a length of plywood running down the keel with a layer of roving over it. In my case it was termites mulch and cockroaches. They even had some visegrips stuck in a pool of resin from when they tried the repair section. Theres also a hump going side to side separating motor and tank areas, which was part of the grid where a bulkhead was that got cut down. Under that was about an inch of putty and resin. I chiseled/peeled ground all that crap out and put some 36oz uni down first then a 1700 then an 1808. Had some resin left over so put another lam down the “beaching area” in the bow. |
Man, this is an awesome build. Keep up the good work!

The Art and Skill of Dirtwheels
Yah, I have had the pleasure of personally seeing Chris’s projects in various stages. He is incredibly talented!!

He could start his own SC boat building company.

Watching your work is very inspiring....Thanks for all the detailed pictures..I may need some advice in a few months...

I think Lisa likes boats as much as you do Doc. |
The trick is to get it home before you even mention it to em! ;)

She has her little Hobie kayak that she's been having fun with...keeps asking when were going out on the little 20 sceptre..almost went out this weekend but tides were wrong for treasure hunting (need low early tides before all the crazies are out). She calls herself a "boat widow" when I'm busy with working on a boat.
dirtwheelsfl_ I hope you don't mind a few PM's down the road with questions as your restores are the best I've seen on this forum. strick |
Strick i sent ya a pm awhile back, lemme know if ya got it!
Were moving along pretty swimmingly here. Fore and aft will have full height decks. Just aft of front bulkhead is freshwater, then fuel--livewell--and 2 compartment bilge which will have an in-deck hatch in the front and a sporty mez style L shaped hatch on the bench/bulkhead. Front bulkhead hatch(es?) undecided. Need to get all the crap outta there one of these days and take a decent pic! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ee95eede_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...431b7b5d_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e7f70b4c_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr 60 gal of fuel https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...52c99dfc_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...239fa0bc_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1c4b49f1_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr |

Wow. Appears to be next level work to my untrained eye. And I really like the tiller plan. Cuts down on a lot of cost and less stuff to break down. Thanks for posting and look forward to the progress and product.

Epic !

Indeed! Look forward to seeing the tank mounting detail. Do I see a layer of Coosa behind Corecell? Drill and tap? I get a different story from every fabricator. Trying to figure out my own bow eye reinforcement detail.
The casual observer would not understand how the detail shots are so compelling but please keep them coming. |
Quote:
The bow eye has lots of glass under it first all the way up the stem, then the block is 1.5” coosa with a 3/8 glass pad glued to it. Then tabbed in. Got a sweet all welded 5/8 thread D-ring to go there. The juice wasn’t worth the squeeze on the towing hole on the Squid Lips haha! |
Livewell corners. The bulkheads have a "cleat" on em for more glue area so i had to notch em...

Close enough to Halloween to say this is scary good stuff!!
|
Dont mind the mess!
Had a bit of a brain fart and ran some 2" conduit for both fuel vent and supply lines. Only to realize i put a big dip in the vent doh! Notching pipes is fun but i dont see becoming an aluminum fabricator in my future... The big holes are just for air circulation, tank is gonna be left au naturale. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4e081168_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr Wanted to keep the exit low back here https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7baa7c3f_c.jpgUntitled by dirtwheelsfl, on Flickr Got a constant rise going forward...
