mercury poppet
hey everyone. i splashed my boat after the console rebuild and motor change. now its overheating. it only does it when its under load. the engine is an 84 2.4 but its bolted to a 97 (i think) midsection with the 2.5 exhaust hole plugged and the oval exhaust ports cut out. i posted my problem on S&F but no replies yet. im hoping some one here can tell me if i need to change the poppet valve. because the t-stats are new (it didnt have any before) and the water pump was put in in november last year and it hasnt been run till now. thanks for your help

Re: mercury poppet
Are you sure you have the poppet valves installed? No poppet valves will result in a loss of water pressure, especially in the top cylinders.

Re: mercury poppet
Good point, no stats maybe no poppits either

Re: mercury poppet
i put new t starts and a poppet valve in mine when i first got it and i can tell you that between the 2 of them it helps alot in the water pressure deparment. My motor had very lil pressure when i got it. now it has alot more(visual gauge not mechanical)

Re: mercury poppet
ive got new t-stats in it now. the poppet maybe bad but i dont know. im going to replace it because its only 20 dollars i think. supposedly my water pump impeller is suspect because it has been sitting since november. i have also been told to just hollow out the thermostats and leave the housing in there. does any one have a detailed pic of the water pump gasket? it could be on backwards or upside down or whatever u want to call it. also can anyone tell me where the serial number on the block is? dont tell me midsection because its not the original one...

Blue - Serial number for the engine can be found here. http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...7/pressure.jpg
Did you swap either adaptor plate when you mounted the powerhead on the 2.5L mid-section? I might be crazy here, but it looks like you are mixing adapter plates bottom from 2.5 and top from 2.4L http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h1...0/IMG_0102.jpg |
Re: mercury poppet
big,
late last nite S&F posted the same response u did. i know it has 2.4 gaskets in it but as far as the plate and exhaust tuner i have no idea.. |
Re: mercury poppet
Yeah . . . I posted this on there too. 2.4 and 2.5L plates are very different.

Re: mercury poppet
so big, before i go to the parts store i want to verify the gaskets i need with u. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h1...0/18989_x2.gif for the upper plate i will need #29 and 29A?
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h1...0/18994_x2.gif and for the exhaust i will need part # 24 and 26 and 33? the guy says he can have the powerhead off in about 30 minutes.. or do u think i can reuse the gaskets that are on there? it has only been run 2 times thanks again |
Re: mercury poppet
What you've marked is correct . . . I've only ever used one base gasket (29 or 29a) under the powerhead, but go by the book . . . I'm kind of a hack when it comes to this :) You might also be able to reuse 24 if it's in good shape.
The guys right . . . he should be able to have that powerhead off and the gaskets changed out in less than an hour. I would supervise if I were you. Make sure he cleans the surfaces well before he puts the new gaskets on given his history of mixing 2.4L and 2.5L adapter plates. Also I would recommend getting more than one base gaskets (29 and 29a) Just in case you forget to put the shift shaft back and muck up the base gasket (it'll save you a trip to the store). |
