I have the HDS 7 and the transducer came with it. The transom mount ducer works well. Yours didn't come with one?

No, I just picked up a 1978 23' from someone who ran out of money while redoing the boat and one did not come with the boat.

Do you know the model number ?

I don't think it matters what transducer you use as long as the connections at the unit match up and you don't have to mount it on the transom. The installation guide showed a way to epoxy it to the center of the hull on the inside. I'm pretty sure you can find one on the lowrance web page though. I just looked it up and the units can be purchased with or without so I'm sure you can get one separately. If you're close to a west marine, maybe try checking there. http://lr.factoryoutletstore.com/cat...ansducers.html Try that link. They have the transom mount for 80 bucks. Product # 106-71

Either an Airmar B60 or a B164 20 degree tilted element is the way to go.

drilling the hole to mount that thing hurts. i didnt want to do it so i walked away as a friend drilled it.

you can take that transom mount one and glue it down in the hull bottom. it does work. thats how i had it before i got the airmar. i used clear silicone so i could remo if needed. the temp is going to be off.

I know what you mean about dilling that big hole....Im looking at the transom mount one also.

the install itself was actually quite easy after the hole was drilled. im going out today and i still have the transom mount glued down. ill run both and report back on the difference.
