Fairing
 

I'm using polyester resin to glass the console I modified. I bought some poly fair from Mertons and was wondering how you guys fair. Heavy first coat, sand then as many thin coats as needed to get it right. Or many thin coats sanded in between each coat. Thanks for the help.

Got it...much like traders fairing issue a while ago, it needs a thick coat to cure properly.

I've had great results with Polyfair,no matter how thick or thin when applied.I used it to fair out extensive damage to the gunnels that the previous owner did,and used it on the rear cap that I cut off when I did the transom.
Never had any curing problems with the Polyfair,no matter the thickness.

Mixed it up on a piece of flexible cutting board material,and applied it where needed,thick or thin.I had better results applying it in thin coats,rather than a thick coat that had to be sanded down.
It doesn't like to be under catalyzed,so it's better to work with small batches,and apply it quickly.
The flexible cutting board mats from the dollar store work nice,any remaining cured waste on it comes right off when you flex the mat.Re use it over and over.

Now I find this out! After cutting up hundreds of cardboard boxes and the project nearing completion.:mad:

that is a good tip!! I will definetly pick some up today. I bought just a quart of poly fair the other day to test and it and i used the whole thing and it came out great. so i just ordered another gallon of it today. thanks for the tip and your history on the product.

I use paper plates.

This is how the poly fair came out on a part of my console after just 2 coats. Can't wait to get more and finish the console.
