Save the inboard! They are rare and highly sought after by those in the know. Inboards have a much lower roll moment and that provides a very stable platform underway and at drift. They also drift beam to. Is it a small block? Most inboards sacrifice top end for much better range and mileage. If you can work on old v8`s you`ll save mucho $ in parts cost. They both have unique benefits and disadvantages
Is it FWC? Check manifolds/ risers, elbows , exhaust, shaft alignment , stuffing box, cutlass bearing , prop, rudder shaft, beds and seals, tranny, motor mounts, beds and alignment, controls, raw water pump, and recirc pump and hoses. A new e-tec 250 is 15 g`s. A long block is 2 g`s max..........Inboards have limited access for work.
Inboards lose much of their limited steering when backing as well. Are you experienced? Draft is also a consideration. Backwater fishing? Bait chasing inside?
I`ve got a nice `89 20sf w/ a 96 150 ocean pro. What are they asking for the 23 and where is it? I`m in W.P.B. Fl and would be happy to give my humble opinion as a non surveyer. My e-mail is

As you can tell I love inboards and realllllly wanted one, but my little truck is maxed out w/ the 20 at the ramp.
Conversions are very tricky at best. The center of gravity was designed much differently for each. Please do not consider this. Besides, I might get a bigger truck. HE HE HE.
Ah gassss . I`m an expert here as I`ve recently been inducted into the flatulence hall of fame. Inboards get 2-3 times the range of 2 strokes, and dont burn oil at $20 a gal either.
Hope this helps,
