Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and I've got a few questions. I'm currently looking at a 1977 23' center console with an inboard. It has a 5.8 volvo in it right now, but it is currently not running. Might be able to bring it back to life but I'm not sure yet. Now to the questions.....
What are the advantages do inboards have over outboards, if any? I have run outboards on previous boats and I was wondering what others think is better. Which, in general, have better gas consumtion and higher top and crusing speeds. Is converting an inboard to an outboard even an option? I have seen where inboard/outboard boats were converted to outboards using a stern bracket. I know the hull design is different at the stern of the boat where the shaft, prop, and rudder come out. Will this effect the water flow or anything else when converting to an outboard? Lastly, how will moving the weight out of the center of the boat to the rear of the boat effect the stance and ride of the boat? I have read that adding the stern bracket adds some flotation to the rear. Would that be enough to counter the change in weight? Any information would be great. Thanks alot. Pat |

Save the inboard! They are rare and highly sought after by those in the know. Inboards have a much lower roll moment and that provides a very stable platform underway and at drift. They also drift beam to. Is it a small block? Most inboards sacrifice top end for much better range and mileage. If you can work on old v8`s you`ll save mucho $ in parts cost. They both have unique benefits and disadvantages
Is it FWC? Check manifolds/ risers, elbows , exhaust, shaft alignment , stuffing box, cutlass bearing , prop, rudder shaft, beds and seals, tranny, motor mounts, beds and alignment, controls, raw water pump, and recirc pump and hoses. A new e-tec 250 is 15 g`s. A long block is 2 g`s max..........Inboards have limited access for work. Inboards lose much of their limited steering when backing as well. Are you experienced? Draft is also a consideration. Backwater fishing? Bait chasing inside? I`ve got a nice `89 20sf w/ a 96 150 ocean pro. What are they asking for the 23 and where is it? I`m in W.P.B. Fl and would be happy to give my humble opinion as a non surveyer. My e-mail is gofastsandman@yahoo.com As you can tell I love inboards and realllllly wanted one, but my little truck is maxed out w/ the 20 at the ramp. Conversions are very tricky at best. The center of gravity was designed much differently for each. Please do not consider this. Besides, I might get a bigger truck. HE HE HE. Ah gassss . I`m an expert here as I`ve recently been inducted into the flatulence hall of fame. Inboards get 2-3 times the range of 2 strokes, and dont burn oil at $20 a gal either. Hope this helps, G>F>S< |
