Egg's - 2:1 was used for 2.0L 135hp/150hp motors . . . 1.87 was on 2.4/2.5L 175hp/200hp. 2:1 gives you a little more torque cause of the gear ratio, but 1.87 is a generally a more desirable all around lower unit. The 150 2.4L xr4 had an odd ball 1.78 with an odd ball small diameter housing 4.25" . . . The small housing was a little faster (less to push through the water), but gears didn't holdup (probably cause most people abused them and it only came in 20" flavor. All 3 were interchangeable on the 135 - 200hp 2.0L - 2.5L
