That's a common misconception, thanks to the inefficiency of modern hulls designed with a wide beam to support the weight of heavy 4-stroke motors and the high deadrise needed to get a decent ride with the wide beam!
Nowadays the average guy thinks even a 20 is underpowered if it doesn't have at least 200 hp, because they don't have a clue about how efficient the SeaCraft VDH bottom design is! When I tell 'em that a SeaCraft 20 works just fine with a LIGHT 100-130 hp motor, they think I'm nuts! Moesly proved that the VDH was 10% faster than conventional Ray Hunt-type deep-V hulls with the same weight and HP way back in the 60's at Mercury's Lake X! It had an unbeatable combination of soft ride and efficiency 50 years ago, and I'm frankly amazed that nobody has come up with anything better in all that time!
