Default Fuel Filter...Will it work?

I have a small 8hp Yamaha OB. that I use to push a small aluminum boat around.

The problem is that I don't use it enough and no matter what I put in the tank it starts to get crappy and clogs the small jets in the carb.

Does this motor have enough suction to pull gas thru an water separator filter? It seems to me that my in line filter does not do the job.

Any other suggestions besides getting fresh gas every time I use it?

Thanks
