"THE VORTEX"

I have not built mine yet. I bought some copper plumbing tube that fits inside the 1" scupper - I did this to maximize the inside diameter for max water flow. I am going w/ the condom idea.

I want to use some of 'that tape' ( it molds to itself and is very malleable - what is that stuff called - it's named after a guys name ? ) on the outside of the copper tube to increase the outside diameter so that it fits snug within the actual scupper in the floor.

QUESTION for the designer/head beer drinker: Is the "T" version a better Vortex thane the balloon/condom ?

Please be advised: I have not had a beer yet, so I am not in true form for talking about the Vortex. I will quickly correct this...

Both methods work and work well. I believe the fingers of a medium thick glove works best when using the diaphragm type VORTEX because of the diameter of the fingers and because of the quality of the rubber, balloons come in second but again the Condom’s although they are a little to thin for lasting scupper usage they have true conversational value that will last well beyond the boating trip you make. I would ask though, not to leave the condom diaphragm VORTEX in the scupper holes while pulling the boat and trailer out of the water with other boaters around that might not understand their purpose when they see them dangling out the scupper holes this could generate adverse conversation about Seacraft boats and their owners which we should protect. I must admit large quantities of beer does help both in the manufacturing process and in your own bata testing program.

I have to give our "founding-father" Fellow-Ship credit for starting my mind set on the improving the vertical scuppers.

I actually have the Vortex kit from Home Depot that he recommended, but decided to go with the Vortex II route for additional washdown/livewell capabilities.

Wow, I can’t believe you found this one in the archives back in 2003 I had a lot of fun with this thread and used the “VORTEX” for several years.
I decided to kick it up a notch on my boat and have done several additional projects on her since then one of which was to spend lots of $ and days of work to do things in more of a traditional manor. One of which was my scuppers

As for the "VORTEX"
I looked around for some better pictures but cant find any. On the second page of this thread are some pictures that if you cut and past and then in large that might help.

Bottom line is this - get two PVC fittings cut the top off, add a finger pull, tape a glove finger to the threaded part with tape, cut a slit in the tip of the glove finger, and add one or two o rings and stick her in.
The “VORTEX” do work very good and you don’t have to do any major scupper projects on the boat.

I've switched my scuppers out the transom if anyone local wants my old ones. Don't think it makes sense to ship them. I went with the "plastic cup cut like a golf ball on a tee" type flapper valve and have a half dozen small solo cups to make replacements with.

I had help finding it.

Very nice scupper job!

However, I'm stilling having issues with visualizing how the Vortex works, especially the Solo plastic sauce cup version. Mainly, I'm not sure how it performs like a check valve? I suppose I need to try throwing one together and testing it out. I'll give it a whirl.
