I'm assuming that it's a Mercruiser?,and that you have already removed the out drive as you said you junked it.
It seems that you need to remove the gimball housing,transom assembly.It's not to difficult,but you need to remove the y pipe and steering cable and a few other parts to access the bolts that hold the inner and outer transom assemblys to the transom.
You will need a 12 point socket to remove the bolts that hold the y pipe.

I removed the unit from two boats,and it's not really difficult,but it is a pia.
