Default Pricing & Transoms

Thought I would get some thoughts on pricing and value from the gods on Classicseacraft.
I am looking at an 1986 23 cc with a 90 225 johnson. the motor seems to be in good shape but the boat is cosmetically in need of help. Some minor softspots in deck, more like de-lam and the transom could be weak but I am not to sure.
Any thoughts on the price, asking is 14,900 and what are some signs to look at on the transom. It flexes a little bit when you really push the motor and has some cracking in the gel coat in the corners.
There is another 23 savage but it is a 1976 for the same price, not sure of the condition but will check it out tomorrow.
I hope I don't jinx myself by telling others of these boats and a mad rush starts

Move on. This boat sounds like it has not been taken care of. However, in the case you can get the boat serveyed and you can prove in writing that the motor is a little weak, the transom is shot and the deck is soft, you may be able to talk the guy down 5 grand. You said nothing about electronics. Figure it this way. Minimal electronics $2000.00, transom replacement, 3000.00(add another $3500 for a bracket if that's your thing) Deck work??? 500 to 2500. Hardware--I have heard the hardware and wiring were not too good on the later models $$????. A 13 year old motor is junk. To buy a leftover 225 merc efi figure 9 grand or a 1999 or so rebuilt omc or yamaha 225, lets say 4 grand. Unless you can get this boat under $10,000, It's not a buy. Figure all the repairs and motor and you are looking at 20k by the time you are done and the boat still has old paint and no t-top. Don't give up.

It depends on what you are willing/planning to put into the boat and whether or not you will be doing any needed work yourself or professionally.

As to what is it worth? Lately that is a hard question to answer. Just remember what you are willing to spend overall: for the boat and any needed repairs.

The boat in question sounds like it may cost a few dollars, if done by a professional, to get back into shape. If you do it yourself, plan on at least 6-8 weekends of work and a few (2-3) thousand dollars.

Any flexing in a transom would be cause enough for me to replace it. This will be your most time consuming project. 3-4 of the 4-5 weekends quoted. We can help you out with it though. The deck repais should be easy enough, 1-2 weekends. and we may as well add in 1-3 weekends for re-finishing the boat.

Hope this helps.

Is this the CC your looking at?

Thats been up there for a while and I think a couple people here looked at it and passed. But if you are also looking at the Savage I think you're talking about - I recommend the Center Console

If that Savage you're talking about is red yer gonna break my heart. I'm talking to the guy on it now. It has old twin 87 Yamaha 150s on it, an aluminum transom cap, and does need some work. I'm trying to see if it will fit in with what I want. Besides, you don't want a savage, right?

forgot to add - I don't think either boat is worth the money being asked in FL. That CC was also originally at 9 or 10K and someone bought it REAL DAMN FAST to try and turn around and make a buck.

Thanks for the info. You all now how it is when you have your heart set on something and then something comes along that you can actually afford.
After some thought I do not think I have the time for a project boat, I barely get to use my Whaler as it is. My wife actually suggested I spend more money and get a boat I can use in my limited time off than always working on it, can you believe that!!
John- I am not sure if that is the boat we all chased for 9K, I heard that was at the sales yard in Pompano. It does seem that it is a bit pricey for the work it will need.
I am going to look at the Savage tomorrow and see what it is like, not sure if I want to give up the space forward, It comes in handy for Kite fishing down here. I'll let you know.

I'm tellin ya, you don't want to give up the room ...

I'm pretty sure thats the same boat - a few of us found it the day it went up on BT and it was sold witin minutes. It showed up again about a month later for 15-16K or so but I beleive it to be the same boat. I had a pic of the original one (now off to the digital disk gods)...

Fellas-

I hate to say it, but we all need to find a different brand of boats to be interested in. Especially when someone in Florida buys a 23 for 9K and turns around and tries to sell it for 15k (or whatever) a few weeks later, or, some NJ used NJ car salesman in plaid pants is hauling up Seacrafts from down south and turning around and selling them for 20-30k.

The sad part is, I guess we only have to blame ourselves and JASON for developing this great site! Plus I should be grateful for that nice 23 Mako I already own.....but there is something about tearing an old Seacraft apart in a barn and rebuilding it by yourself that keeps me coming back for more.

Ed - thanks for reminding me

ychtcptn - have you checked out this one? http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/6/6/40679966.htm Its been up there for 3-4 months and has had a lot of work done AND the wife pleasing big console (porta potti) ... More than I want to spend but if I was in that range I'd check it out. Being that its been up there for a few months, can probably be had for 18K or so.

I think CMB is chasing the best value CC out there right now. By the boat, unload the twins, put a big fat single on the back
