Thanks Scott
Per Scott's advise I checked the fiberglassed flat boxes where the batteries sit on in the rear of my 23cc for moisture. Sure enough a small trickle of water leaked from the drilled hole. A witch hunt began!
Both sides held moisture. I will be relpacing them tomorrow provided it stops raining for at least 1 day. The rain has slowed my progress to the point were I may just put her in a shop soon. I have tested the stringers the same way in multiple areas bow to stern and I have nice dry stringers (thank you Jesus) Thanks goes to Scott for alerting me to the possibility of moisture. I had no idea that there was wood in these flat boxes. I thought this area was part fiberglass foam- stringer system in these boats. I was wondering if there are any other areas on these boats that contain wood that I should know about other then the hatches, gunnel cap, battery boxes, and transom? Strick

Re: Thanks Scott
Ummm....I think your welcome ... Looks like I made more work for ya !!!
Just trying to passing along what I’ve observed, learned and things that happened to me...Glad I could help. When I took a transducer off the transom water pissed out for a minute .... I traced it to that area of the bilge ...right on that second plane of the hull .... jumped on the "battery" platform and felt the "sponge effect". As far as structure goes ... I don’t think it does much....seems like nothing but a flat spot they just quickly glassed in .... Pretty funny as Seafari and I were talking about that issue this morning !! |

Re: Thanks Scott
Yea it was like a lake in there and I did not even know it. The wood stunk like hell and basicly fell apart in your hands. Ya know I must have stepped on those boxes a 100 times and they never felt spongy. Never did a jump test though.... guess I'll have to remember that one. At any rate I decided to do away with them all together because I'm not going to put much down there and dont really need a flat surface in that spot. Also I have enough work to do without making unnecessary projects. There will be an hatch in the middle of the deck that will give me access to the aft area of were those boxes were. If I need to put something down there later then I can make a wedge to level it. Here is what it used to look like... and what it lookes like now.

What material did you use for the strips .... almost looks like "starboard" or something of the sort ??? |

Re: Thanks Scott
Yea it's like starboard... I got it at Taps plastics. The problem with it is that nothing wants to stick to it. I've already epoxyied it to the deck however it wants to break loose if you step on it. I'm probably going to have to screw it to the deck with some 5200 on the underside then run some light cloth over the top. I should have used some core-cell strips instead which would have been easier but it's too late now so I'll have to make it work. I dont know I still may use the core cell as I have lots left over.
