HA SCOTT
I ROLLED WITH A FOAM ROLLER AND I DIDN’T GET ANY BUBBLES THE PRIMER DRIES VERY FAST AND BECAUSE OF THAT YOU WILL GET STREAKS WITH A BRUSH. THAT’S WHY I DIDN’T BRUSH OVER THE FOAM ROLLER. THE STUFF SANDS OFF REEL EASY YOU GOT TO WATCH NOT PUTTING ON TOO MUCH PRESSURE OR YOU WILL TAKE IT ALL OFF. AS FOR THE MICROLITE FILLER I USED A LOT OF THAT ON MY FAIRING PROJECT AND HAVE DONE SOME PRIMER WORK AND SOME PAINTING WITH STERLING I HAVE HAD NO BAD RESULTS YET WITH THE POSSIBLE INCOMPATIBLE PROBLEM. I THINK THAT THE PRIMER WOULD BE MORE THAN ENOUGH BARRIER BETWEEN THE FAIRING COMPOUND AND THE PAINT. IF I START SEEING ANY BAD RESULTS I WILL LET YOU KNOW. I HAVE KNOWN THE RECOMMENDATION OF USING ANOTHER LAYER OF EPOXY BUT TO DO THAT MEANS ANOTHER SANDING TO GET IT SMOTHE AND THAT STUFF IS NOT EASY TO GET FAIRED IT DOESN’T GO ON OR SAND OFF WELL. I WILL BE PAINTING FIRST COAT OF STERLING TOMORROW MORNING. I AM PAINTING IN MY GARAGE AND I WILL PUT A PLASTIC SHEET OVER THE TOP JUST TO KEEP THE POSSIBILITY OF DUST OFF.
HA SCOTT ON THE BATTERY PADS YOU BETTER CHECK THEM OUT REALLY WELL (IF IT WERE ME) I WOULD DRILL SOME HOLES IN THEM TO SEE IT THEY ARE DRY OR NOT. YOU CAN ALWAYS PLUG UP THE HOLES IF THEY ARE GOOD BUT IF THEY ARE SOGGY SALT WATER LOGGED THAT COULD CAUSE BLISTERING IN THE INSIDE OF THE BOAT LIKE TRADER GOT WITH HIS STRINGERS ON MY BOAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER DRILLED HOLES IN THEM TO MOUNT THE BATTERY’S AND WATER GOT IN THROUGH THOSE HOLES AND I HAD LAMINATED GLASS AND BLACK CRAP COMPOSITE NOW IS THE TIME TO CHECK IT OUT NOT LATER.

Thanks for the follow up on the painting ....Hey good luck tomorrow ...hope all goes well!! will be waiting to see/hear how it comes out.

The other thing with the battery/stringer area...where did you drill to see if it was wet??? I would guess on the side of the stringer..If it is wet and needs to be replaced I think I would have some problems getting to that area.... as you know that platform/stringer extends all the way back to the transom...You had that area all open when you did the transom rebuild... right?? I dont know how , if I need to, I will get to that area (without doing what you had to do with the transom and all ).

WELL I DID TWO HRS OF PAINTING TODAY ROLLER AND TIP. I USED A VERY SHORT NAP ROLLER AND A GOOD BRUSH. I HAD SOME SHORT NAP ROLLERS I BOUGHT SO I THOUGHT I WOULD USE ONE ON THE FIRST COAT TO SEE WHAT I THING. I FOUND OUT WHAT ONE PAINT GUY TOLD ME WAS RIGHT WHICH IS THAT THE ROLLERS IS ONLY A DELIVERY VEHICLE TO GET THE PAINT ONTO THE PROJECT AND THE BRUSH IS WHAT DOES THE REAL PAINTING. I ALSO FOUND THAT I STILL HAD A LINT PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH I CLEANED THE SURFACES WELL BEFORE I STARTED. I THINK FOR THE FINISH COAT I WILL USE A FOAM ROLLER (NO LINT ON IT) AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. I WILL PROBABLY STILL USE THESE SHORT NAP ROLLER COVERS FOR THE NO SKID WORK. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO CHECKING OUT WHAT I DID WHEN I GET HOME TODAY. PAINTING THE STUFF IS NOT MUCH DIFFERENT THAN PAINTING ANY OTHER PAINT WHEN YOU GET INTO IT. THEY DO SAY THAT THIS PAINT DOESN’T HADE IMPERFECTIONS BUT SHOWS THEM IS A ACCURATE STATEMENT. IF THE PRIMER HIDES THE PROBLEM YOU ARE OK IF THE PRIMER DOESN’T HADE THE PROBLEM THE PAINT WILL NOT ETHER.
I DID DRILL HOLES ON THE SIDES OF THE STRINGERS AS CLOSE TO THE HULL AS POSSIBLE. AS FOR THE BATTERY PLATFORM YOU ARE RIGHT TO GET IS ALL REMOVED YOU DO NEED ACCESS. I STARTED BY TESTING UNDER WHERE THE BATTERY’S SAT WHEN I FOUND A BIG PROBLEM I STARTED REMOVING IT. I DID GET ALL THE WAY BACK THERE BUT WHEN I REMOVED THE TWO HATCHES AND LIVE WELL IT OPENED THAT AREA AND I CLEANED IT UP AT THAT TIME.

What area of the boat did you start with??? and what color?

Thanks for the info on the stringer I guess I'll start pokin' holes in the thing....hoppe I come up dry but somehow I dont think I will.

I DID THOSE PIECES I TOOK OFF THE BOAT. CENTER CONSOL TWO LARGE HATCH COVERS TWO SMALL HATCH COVERS THE ELECTRICAL BOX AND THE HATCH THAT GIVES YOU ACCESS UNDER THE FRONT CASTING PLATFORM TO THE HULL. I PAINTED WITH A SNOW WHITE I WILL PAINT THE INSIDE OF THE BOAT WITH WHITE THE SIDES IN A FOAM VERY LIGHT GREEN BLUE AND THE BOTTOM IN WHITE.

SPENT SOME TIME CHECKING OUT MY PAINT JOB FROM YESTERDAY. THIS IS MY CONCLUSION.
FIRST OFF IF YOU USE TOO COURSE OF SAND PAPER IT WILL SHOW THROUGH ON THE FIRST COAT. I DON’T THING IT WILL SHOW AFTER THE SECOND BUT I WILL SAND WITH ETHER 220 OR 320 BETWEEN COATS OF TOP COAT FOR NOW ON. SECOND DUST IS A REAL PROBLEM FOR NOW ON JUST FOAM ROLLER COVERS. THE FIRST 1 OR 2 PIECES I DID HAD DUST SPECKS ALL OVER IT. THE LAST 2 PIECES HAD VERY LITTLE DUST ON THEM. I CAN ONLY ATTRIBUTE THAT TO THE SHORT NAP ROLLER COVERS THEY MUST BE DROPPING SPECKS EVEN THOUGH I TOOK PRECAUTIONS TO PREVENT IT.
THIRD WHEN I BRUSHED (WITH A GOOD BRUSH) THERE WERE SOME STREAKS FROM THE BRUSH BUT AFTER THE DRYING TIME NO STREAKS AT ALL. YOU CANT TELL THAT IT WAS NOT SPRAYED (EXCEPT FOR THE DUST ON THE FIRST TWO) PIECES. ONE MORE THING I DON’T KNOW ABOUT AWLGRIP BUT STERLING DID NOT RUN. THE CENTER CONSOL HAD NO RUNS ON THE ENTIRE THING, I FELT IF I WAS GOING TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH RUNNING THAT WOULD BE THE PIECE THAT IT WOULD SHOW UP. NOTHING NO STREAKS AND NO RUNS THANK GOT FOR THAT. ALL IN ALL PAINTING THE WHOLE BOAT WITH A TWO PART PAINT IS SOMETHING YOU CAN DO IF YOU DON’T SKIP ANY STEPS AND TAKE YOUR TIME AND KEEP YOU JOB OUT OF THE WIND.
