Two questions for you ....or anyone else Did you sand away all the original non-skid ... I cant remember if you did or did not??? Second...The forward bulkhead that makes the anchor locker....What did you do with that?? I've been told that the Formica can cause adhesion problems with the paint??? I want to replace mine ... but dont know if it can come out/ go back in... in one piece...to be replaced with something like Starboard... Anyone have any experience with this??? |

THE NON SKID ON THE TWO BIG HATCH COVERS I TOOK A BELT SANDER AND SANDED IT DOWN TO MAKE A FLAT SURFACE. I THROUGH AWAY ALL THE OTHER NON SKIT ON THE DECK INCLUDING THE DECK ABOVE THE GAS TANK AND REPLACED IT WITH PLYWOOD AND ONE LAYER OF NEW 6 OZ GLASS AND ONE LAYER OF MATT GLASS PLUS FAIRING COMPOUND PRIMER AND THEN (STILL DOING THE) TWO COATS OF PAINT. AS FOR THAT SMALL ROPE STORAGE COMPARTMENT FORMICA PIECE WHEN I REMOVED THE CAP I REMOVED IT AND USED IT AS A STENCIL TO MAKE A ¾ “ PLYWOOD REPLACEMENT PIECE GLASSED BOTH SIDES FAIRED AND PAINTED IT. THEN I REPLACED IT FULLY COMPLETED BEFORE I PUT THE CAP BACK ON THE BOAT. IT ONLY HAS TWO BIG SCREWS HOLDING IT THERE. THAT FORMICA PIECE WAS DRY ROTTED AT THE BOTTOM AND WAS SHOT LIKE EVERY THING ELSE IN THE BOAT. I DON’T LEAVE MUCH OF THE ORIGINAL WOOD IN THE BOAT MAYBE ONE OR TWO SMALL PIECES NOT MUCH. I EVEN TOOK OUT THE WOOD IN THE CENTER CONSOL (BULK HEAD) AND THAT SHELF AND REPLACED THE BULKHEAD WITH A PIECE OF ½ PLYWOOD LAMINATED BOTH SIDES AND GLASSED TO THE SIDES OF THE CENTER CONSOL. WHEN I GET TOTALLY DONE I WILL TAKE PICTURES TO SHOW YOU GUYS. TODAY I REAMED OUT THE TWO LITTLE HOLES THAT HELP YOU PICK UP THOSE TWO SMALL HATCH COVERS IN THE BACK OF THE BOAT AND PUT TO FLUSH MOUNT HATCH COVERS LIFTS WHERE THE HOLES WERE. I HOPE I WILL BE ABLE TO PAINT THE BOAT THIS WEEKEND SO I CAN START PUTTING SOME OF THE PIECES BACK TOGETHER AGAIN. I GOT A GUY THAT SAID HE WOULD CALL ME ABOUT A QUOTE TO SPRAY GEL COAT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BOAT IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT I AM GOING TO LET HIM DO IT NEXT WEEK I WILL SAND IT SMOOTH AND BUFF IT OUT HE WILL JUST DO ANY FAIRING ON THE BOTTOM AND SPRAY. I SEARCHED FOR A “HULL ONLY” DEAL FOR ABOUT 6-8 MONTHS. I FELT I WANTED TO START WITH THE HULL AND PUT NEW FROM THERE. MOST SEACRAFTS 20 PLUS YEARS OLD HAVE OLDER TRAILERS, LEANING POSTS, MOTORS, T-TOPS & ELECTRONICS ON THEM. I DIDN’T WANT TO BUY ALL THAT OLD STUFF JUST TO SELL OFF ALL OR MOST OF IT SO I COULD GET THE HULL. I FINALLY GOT WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR JUST THE HULL ON A 77 FOR $4,000. THE PREVIOUS OWNER KEPT THE REST AND USED IT OR SOLD IT OFF. I HAVE RE DID EVERYTHING SO FAR WITH NEW. DID THE DECK, GAS TANK FLOOR, CAP AND TRANSOM THE ONLY THING I DIDN’T HAVE TO DO WAS THE STRINGERS. PUT EVERYTHING TOGETHER WITH WEST EPOXY PROBABLY 10 GALLONS OF THE STUFF. NOW NEW 225 YAMAHA, NEW TRAILER, NEW ELECTRONICS, NEW LEANING POST, NEW T- TOP NEW GAS TANK, NEW, NEW, NEW. SO FAR I AM AT ABOUT $25,000 PROBABLY WILL FINISH OFF AT AROUND $27 TO $30 WHEN I GET DONE. I HAVE A FRIEND THAT JUST GOT A QUOTE ON A NEW SEACRAFT BOAT FROM OUTDOOR WORLD NO ELECTRONICS, NO MOTOR OR TRAILER. BUT I THINK T-TOP AND LEANING POST FOR $30,000. AS WE KNOW A NEW ONE WOULD COST APPROX $50 TO $60 GRAND NOW A DAYS WHEN YOU GET DONE. I AM IN AT ABOUT 50% WITH ALL NEW. I KNOW I COULD HAVE SHOPPED A USED RIG FOR ABOUT $20,000 BUT A TOTALLY RE DONE 77 WAS MORE WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I had my boat painted 2 years ago, used Awl grip and I really like it. It cleans off very easy light scrubbing.Iwas going to try to do it myself but I did'nt have the tools. I've seen boats that have been rolled and they look good, but you have to know what your doing.It cost me about 4,000.The guy did a great job but I would recommend him to no one,He took 4 months instead of the 1 month he promised. The guy the did my full transom in Stuart Fla.also awl grips.RS
