Default Chopping out the splash well & side compartments

I am considering removing the splash well and side compartments out of my 20 cc, and extending the deck all the way to the transom. has anyone done this before? would it make the boat unsafe?
i would be putting a 25" transom in as well.
thanks

If you raised the floor I could see eliminating the splash well but the 18's/20's ride so low in the stern as it is, that getting rid of the splash well without raising the floor wouldn't be my idea of dry feet.

As to the compartments, well, that is where my fuel filter, trim tab reservoir and a few other things reside but it will be interesting to see what others think

Yea Briguy, Im looking at it and a 20 cc is small enough but I think by getting rid of that stuff adding a higher transom & having the right drains it could give me huge fishing space. Do you have a problem with a wet transom?

Bimini,

On my 23' my solution was to run the deck drains directly into the bilge. I run 2 1500 gph rule bilge pumps. Millions of other boats have been running this set up for years. In my book, self bailing could turn into self failing. As for cutting out the rear well. Just do it. Now I have as much room behind my leaning post as a 31' Contender.

I did have a problem with a slightly wet transom. My top corners formed stress cracks and water intruded. I cut the top of the transom glass off in the corners, dug out the wood and filled it with a thickened epoxy mix after inserting 2, 14 inch galvanized steel rods as far as they would go. When I drilled the holes for the bracket, it was dry and solid everywhere except one hole. Everything is fine after hanging 1000 lbs of bracket and motors hanging off the back for 3 months. I still have not done my finish work so this weekend I will be at it again.

I will do the same thing this fall-remove splash well, redo transom(raise it to twenty-five) and maybe do something with the side compartments(they look like they add a lot of support)?

Maybe run the bottom drains out the back?

How did you start the transom from the inside?- just cut into the top corners and go down..remove all the rot to the bottom?

Yea I haven't started this project yet im still trying to get ideas for any modifications. Im sure you can just reinforce the transom and floor for any lost integrity. What size is your seacraft POGDEN? are you worried about extra water coming aboard with out a splash well? i was going to take the scuppers and put them in the corners and out the back. Bimini,

I have a 20'CC. It is the best boat I have ever had. Do you think I will have trouble with water coming in without the back splash with a 25" transom? I was talking to Finster and we were tossing around the idea of raising it up to 30", maybe thats the way to go. I'm pretty new to these boats and changing things with them. Give me a good motorcyle to work on, at least when that fails you can walk home.

I just put it in 7/3 and pulled it out last night. Noticed it was sitting a little lower in the back. With the deck plugs removed, water was now pooling inn the back instead of running out. I couldn't seem to get my bilge running. When I pulled the plug at the ramp, I bet at least 50 gallons of water came out.
I will replace the deck and rear thru hulls this weekend. I think the way EBEACH, Miles and White Hawk suggested.
Now I know why I needed two bilge pumps!!!

But what really pissed me off is I scaped about two feet of gelcoat off the side of my boat getting it on the trailer as I was fighting GREENHEADS.

Thank God for cold beer and hot women.

Cheers,
Pat

I am doing just that to my 20'. I cut out the rotted deck and everything in the stern. I am putting in a Divinycell deck all the way to the stern, filling in the transom cut out and installing a Seamark single bracket. You can see some pics of the project at
