Just a product update on West Marines Peel Away Bottom Paint Remover. It Didn't work. The stuff is $60 a gallon and I wouldn't recommend it. It softened the paint a little but didn't actually remove it after two coats.

I had good luck in using Home Depot "peel away".
It's probably the same stuff, less expensive as the West .... - Nick |

Dolphinite makes a very good gel based bottom paint stripper. It is thicker than most strippers and adheres well to the hull. I used it on a 1969 Aquajunk center console that had about 10 layers of bottom paint on it (not to mention a huge crack in the hull). The key is to glob the stuff on (don't continue to brush it like paint), let is sit (at least a few hours) and then scrape it off. It really comes off very easy. Afterwards you'll have minimal sanding to do. Oh yeah, before I forget, be sure to lay down plastic or paper under the boat to catch the scrapings and when you are finished dispose of in an environmentally sensitive manner. You'll want to wear a face shield, gloves and probably a tyvex suit....the scrapings kinda fly around.
Good luck. -Ed- |

Thanks for the info. I've heard about other brands that worked. This one definitely didn't. Its advertised as a bio freindly product without dangerous chemicals. I globbed it on a test spot and covered it with the paper provided and let it sit overnight. Then scraped and repeated the first step again but I was really unhappy with the results. I had a freind that ysed some other kind of remover and then pressure washed it off. He said it worked good. When I try again thats what I'll do.

The peel away works if you apply in ideal conditions in an ideal manner. I haven't gotten lucky on 1 or 2 applications out of 5 maybe. One day I will figure out the correct formula for stripping paint with ease. Someone suggested the Interlux stripper but I haven't ponied up the $75/gal to try it yet.

I neatly repackaged the stuff and took it back. West gave me no problem and returned my money.

I used peel away from Home Depot with some sucess, but found oven cleaner sprayed on, let sit for a few minutes and then throughly wash off to work the best. Paint literally melted off.

I used Easy Off to remove paint from sides, never tried it on bottom paint.
