New guy needs advise
I am new to the boat world and therefore new to Sea Craft. I have spent the last six month shopping around for my first boat and have fallen in love with the older Sea Craft Hulls. I need info to make a smart purchase on a 20-21ft CC. Questions like...What is the Potter Hull? How do I assess the strength/condition of the hull by a visual inspection? How do I assess if the Transom is intact? If there is a soft spot in the floor, does it matter where it is? Does is signify a localized problem or signal rot thoughout the hull? Again, I am new to boats and this rookie needs help! Thanks in advance for your response.

Re: New guy needs advise
Hello Welcome to the wild world of boats and welcome to CSC. Some short answers to which I am sure many will elaborate .
1. A Potter hull is any SeaCraft hull manufactured between 1968- and early 1980, The years Bill Potter owned SeaCraft. Many find this hull desirable beacuse Mr. Potter built a fine boat. 2. If you are new to boating and are inspecting a boat hire a suryeor to go over the boat with you, they are trained to spot what you are looking for and will be able to show you first hand. Another option is to have a friend or member of this site, if willing, check out the boat with you. welcome |

Sorry …couldn’t resist Anyhow .... Welcome !!.... Potter hulls.... Their a good thing The thing I would caution you on most is getting into a "project boat" vs “turn key”(I'm not even certain that is your intent) might not be the best thing ..having never owned a boat .. If you take it to a "professional" to restore , do fiberglass work etc etc it's going to cost ya .... SO just be prepared for that .... A few here have done it themselves … but depending on the condition of the hull you find ….Well …It can be a pretty big task and time consuming An older SeaCraft that has already” been there… done that” and gone through a restoration process... might be a serious option for you .... it will cost more ... but you need not deal with restoration cost and headaches .... That being said ... You've hooked onto a good one in the “For sale” area .... Seafari's boat would be an absolute gem for you ... 20’ SeaCraft …Potter built!!..not to mention the condition its in!!! Good luck !!!! |
