Default Chalky 1977 Hull. What to do?

I have a 1977 18'6 SF. I don't think the boat has been buffed in several years and is very chalky and dull looking (a little yellowish at the waterline). I am soon getting the bottom repainted and would like to have the hull shining like a diamond if possible. What products would you guys recommend I use with a high speed buffer.

If you want to save some time, I suggest you try a DA with 1000 or 800 paper on a test area to see how that works. I like to use a water spray when doing it to lubricate and keep the paper from loading up. You don't need to take off much, but it could take forever with a heavy compound. Follow that with a medium compound and a wool pad, then a least 2 coats of wax with a foam pad.

The bottom is another story, but prep is 90% of the job.

And when your done with yours, I have some others that need...

SC77,
I have a 78' and before I got I don't think it was ever waxed. Needless to say it was very chalky. I started with 400 and went to 600, then 1000, 1500, 2000, 3M rubbing and polishing compounds. Then wax. One thing that is very important, take it slow don't go to hard with the heavier grit paper, use wet/dry paper and like Otto said use water to lubricate and keep the paper from loading up. I actually used a spray bottle with a weak soap solution(an old trick). Also beer will keep you lubricated as well.
